COMING UP: On Wed., Apr. 10, Utah hosts Southern Utah in a doubleheader match-up at 1:30 p.m. in Salt Lake City. The Utes will take on in-state rival BYU on Sat., Apr. 13 at 12:00 p.m. (DH) at Ute Field.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The University of Utah softball team made two amazing comebacks to sweep the Colorado State Rams in a MWC match-up at Ute Field on Sat., Apr. 6. The Utes won, 3-2 and 4-3. Utah split with the New Mexico Lobos, losing game one, 7-6 and winning game two, 3-0 at Ute Field on Fri., Apr. 5. The Utes dropped a game to the No. 18 ranked Pacific Tigers, 10-1 in Salt Lake City on Thurs., Apr. 4. Utah defeated the Utah State Aggies, 6-2 in Logan, Utah on Tues., Apr. 2. Currently, the Utes are 16-30-0 overall, 5-3 in MWC play. Utah is on a three-game win streak.
Utah has already faced 10 teams this season that made it to the NCAA Tournament last year. The Utes will face three more teams this season that made it to post-season play in 2001. Utah has already faced 23 teams that were ranked or received votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. Overall, the Utes are 1-21 on the season vs. teams that are ranked or have received votes.
QUOTING STEVENS: On the upcoming non-conference and MWC games- "After coming off last week and two great wins on Saturday, I feel the team is much more stable, prepared and confident about where they are going. I think they will be a lot tougher to beat now that their confidence level is up. I think its great to be at home again and these are big games for us. I am confident we will show up and play tough."
SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH: The Southern Utah Thunderbirds are currently 15-19 overall. Most recently, the Thunderbirds split with Oakland University, winning 6-0 and losing the late game, 8-5 on Sat., Apr. 6 in Cedar City, Utah. On Fri., Apr. 5, Southern Utah lost 2-0 to Oakland and won game two, 5-3 at home.
Precious Gallo leads the team with a .348 batting average and totals 23 hits, 10 runs, 4 doubles, and five RBI in 66 at bats. Teammate Lacee LePrey averages .324 on the season and has racked up 34 hits, 17 runs, 10 doubles, one triple and four home runs for 21 RBI in 105 at bats. LePrey leads Southern Utah on the mound with a 2.82 ERA in 121.2 innings pitched. As a team, the Thunderbirds have a .242 batting average and a 3.52 ERA.
Laurel Simmons is in her fourth season at the helm of the Southern Utah softball program. She has a 61-121 career record.
SCOUTING BRIGHAM YOUNG: The Brigham Young softball team is currently 24-16 overall, 3-5 in MWC play. Most recently, BYU split with New Mexico, losing game one, 7-6 and winning game two, 6-0 on Sat., Apr. 6 in Provo, Utah.
Leading the Cougars is Oli Keohohou. She has a .421 batting average and totals 40 hits, 43 runs, three doubles 14 homers and 35 RBI in 95 at bats. Teammate Brooke Cadiente averages .314 on the season and has racked up 38 hits, 29 runs, eight doubles, nine home runs and 37 RBI in 121 at bats. Niki Andersen leads the Cougars on the mound with a 3.47 ERA in 80.1 innings pitched. As a team, BYU has a .256 batting average and a 4.07 ERA.
Mary Kay Amicone is in her third season at the helm of the BYU softball program. She has a 51-49 career record.
UP NEXT: Utah hits the road on Tues., Apr. 16, facing the Utah State Aggies in a single-game at 3:00 p.m. in Logan, Utah. On Thurs., Apr. 18, the Utes will host Cal-State Northridge for a single-game contest at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will face the UNLV Rebels on Fri., Apr. 19 at 1:30 p.m. (DH) and the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Apr. 20 at 12:00 p.m. (DH) at Ute Field. On Tues., Apr. 23, the Utes take on the Utah State Aggies in a single-game contest at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will face Southern Utah on Wed., Apr. 24 for a single-game match-up in Cedar City, Utah at 3:00 p.m. On Sat., Apr. 27, the Utes will play in-state rival BYU in Provo, Utah (DH) at 12:00 p.m. Utah travels to Albuquerque, N.M. on Fri., May 3, facing New Mexico in a doubleheader match-up at 1:00 p.m. On Sun., May 5, the Utes will take on the Colorado State Rams at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Collins, Colo (DH). The Utes will host the Utah State Aggies in a non-conference match-up at 3:00 p.m. on Tues., May 7. On Thurs.-Sat. May 9-11, Utah will participate in the MWC Tournament held in Provo, Utah.
HEAD COACH MONA STEVENS: Mona Stevens, who has built a reputation as one of the top coaches in the nation on both the national and international levels, is in her fifth season as head coach at Utah.
Stevens has the best winning percentage in school history. She currently posts a 203-144-1 (.585) career overall record and an 80-50-1 (.615) career conference record in five seasons. Her 2000 team was the NCAA Region 1 Tournament runner-up, and placed third in the NCAA Regional Tournament in 1997. Stevens was selected as the 2000 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.
2002 UTAH RANKINGS IN THE MWC: Utah, as a team leads the MWC in hits (293), and at bats (1195). The Utes are second in doubles (42), total bases (397) batters struck out (181), innings pitched (298.1) and third in sac bunts (34), home runs (18), walks (100) and triples (4). Utah is fourth in batters struck out looking (29), opposing batting average (.282), ERA (3.12) and on base percentage (.315), and fifth in RBI (109), stolen bases (37), batting average (.245), slugging percentage (.332) and runs scored (126). Individually, 11 Utah players ranked among the top 10 in the MWC statistical leaders a combined 57 times.
STEVENS HITS 200TH CAREER WIN: Utah's winningest coach in school history, Mona Stevens recorded her 200th career win on Tues., Apr. 2 with a 6-2 win over Utah State in Logan, Utah.
SOFTBALL APPROACHES 800TH CAREER WIN: Utah, as a team is approaching its 800th career win and need just three more wins to hit the mark.
