SALT LAKE CITY--Utah hurler Mitch Maio, from Salt Lake City, Utah (Brighton HS), was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season, on May 6. Maio, along with BYU's Nate Fernley (2001) are the only two MWC Pitchers/Players to receive the honor four times.
The senior righthander tossed a complete-game shutout as he helped the Utes win the final game of their series vs. New Mexico, 3-0, last weekend. Maio struck out seven and held the league's best hitting team to a .152 batting average. The performance earned him his league-best eighth win of the season, against one loss. Maio also leads the conference with a 3.38 ERA.
