COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
With two new bowls extending offers to Mountain West Conference teams, Utah and the other MWC schools now have four postseason options. On May 2, the Mountain West Conference announced that it had secured multi-year agreements with four postseason football bowl games, beginning with the 2002 football season.
The MWC had previously extended its relationships with the AXA Liberty Bowl and the Sega Sports Las Vegas Bowl, and in May, announced new agreements with the San Francisco Bowl and the Seattle Bowl.
The AXA Liberty Bowl features the only guaranteed champion-vs.-champion match-up outside the BCS system, matching the MWC champion against the winner of Conference USA.
The Sega Sports Las Vegas Bowl pairs teams from the Mountain West and the Pac-10 conferences. Utah has won two Las Vegas Bowl championships in recent years, beating Fresno State in 1999 and beating USC last December.
The No. 3 MWC team will play in the San Francisco Bowl against a Big East opponent. The No. 4 MWC team will play in the Seattle Bowl against an ACC opponent.
Said Utah Head Coach Ron McBride, "The locations of the new bowls are great because they are close enough that our fans will be able to go. San Francisco and Seattle are great towns. There is lots to see and do in those cities and they are good places to take a family. The nice thing about all four of our bowls is that we'll play teams we never see during the regular season and they are teams from prestigious conferences. The Mountain West Conference commissioner, Craig Thompson, did a great job of putting this bowl package together," added McBride, who has taken Utah to six bowl games in his first 12 years as head coach.
