Utah Quick Hits
Utah fell from second to fourth place after dropping two-of-three to New Mexico. The Utes are now 13-7 at home, (28-22, 12-12). Senior Adam Castleton and Nate Weese guide the Ute offensive attack. Castleton is batting .380, while Weese boasts a team-high 13 home runs and 69 hits. Senior righthander Mitch Maio leads the conference with an 8-1 record and a 3.38 ERA. As a team, Utah ranks second in the league with a 5.82 ERA and fourth with a .318 batting average.
Utah vs. Brigham Young
The Cougars took two-of-three from the Utes in Provo, Utah earlier this season. Last season, each team dropped its home series, 1-2, but took the road series, 2-1. All three games will be broadcast on KOVO Radio (960 AM) with Brent Norton calling.
Scouting The Cougars
Brigham Young is tied with Air Force for second place in the conference standings, with a 12-11 record. The Cougars defeated Southern Utah, 12-3, 9-4, earlier this week in Provo, Utah. Piloting the Cougs' pitching staff is Jeff Mousser with a 7-4 record and 4.78 ERA. Dave Jensen leads BYU's plate attack with a .386 average, 46 RBI and eight home runs. Cameron Coughlan ranks first on the team with 46 runs scored, and his 22 stolen bases is third best in the conference rankings.
Last Week
Utah continued to struggle against the Lobos, who swept the Utes earlier this season, as they dropped two-of-three games at home. In game one, Utah managed its only run in the first inning off a home run by Nate Weese as it lost 10-1. The Utes scored four runs in the bottom of the first, but couldn't overcome a 12-5 Lobo victory in game two. Ute hurler Mitch Maio held the Lobos to five hits, while shutting them out, 3-0 to win game three.
Esmay Insight
"Everybody is bunched in the conference standings so every game from here on out is make or break for seeding purposes."
Who's Hot
Mitch Maio held the conference's best hitting team to just five knocks, while shutting them out for the first time this season. The senior has a conference-high eight wins and a conference-low 3.38 ERA.
Take Note
The Utes have connected for at least one extra-base hit in all but two of their 50 games. At home, Utah is batting .335 with a team ERA of 5.12, versus a .309 average with a 6.28 ERA on the road. The Utes have swiped 50 bases in their 28 wins, but on the flip side only have 19 stolen bases in their 22 losses.
