Silvey Dominguez, who has 21 years of college coaching experience, has joined the men's basketball staff at the University of Utah as the top assistant coach. The announcement came today from Ute head coach Rick Majerus.
Dominguez spent the past year as an assistant coach at UTEP. Before then, he was an assistant at USC (1997-2001) and St. Mary's (1992-96). In his final season at USC, the Trojans made the "Elite Eight" of the NCAA Tournament.
A 1975 graduate of New Mexico with a bachelor's degree in political science and Spanish, Dominguez received his MBA in business administration from Western New Mexico in 1981. Dominguez's wife is named Debora.
"What we're bringing in with Silvey is someone who is committed to coaching and will do a terrific job in these three aspects. One, he will be a great assistant for coordinating our recruiting efforts. Two, he will relate well with the players and share his passion for the game. Three, he is someone who will help our players to develop their skills," said Majerus. "Silvey is a very good person whose philosophy of stressing education first, basketball second, coincides with ours. He is energetic and enthusiastic. Finally, my great friend and role model, Coach Don Haskins, couldn't have recommended him more highly."
"I'm looking forward to the challenge of joining Coach Majerus' staff at the University of Utah," said Dominguez. "This is a great opportunity for me, and one I felt I couldn't afford to pass up. I enjoyed my time in El Paso. My wife and I made some great friends and I was fortunate to work with some outstanding people at UTEP. I wish Coach Rab, his staff and the Miners my best for the coming season and beyond."
With the hire of Dominguez, Majerus' coaching staff is in place for the 2002-03 season. Kerry Rupp, who joined the Ute staff last summer, has been moved up to second assistant. Eric Jackson, Utah's video coordinator the past two seasons, has been promoted to assistant coach. Scott Garson, a head manager at the U. the past three years, takes over as video coordinator.
