SALT LAKE CITY - An appearance in the Maui Invitational for the third time in the last nine years, match-ups with four regular-season league champions during the nonconference slate and 15 games against teams that advanced to the postseason a year ago headline the 2002-03 Utah men's basketball schedule announced today. (Please scroll to bottom of the page for complete schedule.)
The Runnin' Utes open the season on Nov. 22 against Southern Utah in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. It will be the first of 16 regular-season home games.
Utah then heads to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational, Nov. 25-27 at the Lahaina Civic Center. The field includes Indiana, which defeated the Utes in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament before losing to Maryland in the national championship game. Two other NCAA teams from a year ago, Kentucky and Gonzaga, are also a part of the tournament. Arizona State, Massachusetts, Virginia and host Chaminade round out the tournament field. Utah takes on Gonzaga in the first round on Nov. 25 at 9:30 p.m. (MST) on ESPN2.
After returning home from Hawaii, Utah hosts defending Big South Conference champion and 2002 NCAA Tournament participant Winthrop on Dec. 3 to tip-off a three-game homestand. Arizona State of the Pac-10 Conference, which played in the NIT last season, invades the Huntsman Center on Dec. 7. The Utes host Northern Iowa on Dec. 14, pitting Ute junior guard Nick Jacobson against his younger brother, Adam, who plays for the Panthers.
Utah plays three road games heading into Christmas. Utah State hosts the Utes on Dec. 17. The Aggies won the Big West regular-season title a year ago. Utah then heads to the West Coast to face Pepperdine on Dec. 20 and San Diego on Dec. 23. Pepperdine tied Gonzaga for the West Coast Conference regular-season championship and made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2002. The Utes have beaten the Waves in each of the last two years as part of the scheduled four-game series.
Alabama visits the Huntsman Center on Dec. 30. The Crimson Tide won the SEC West Division last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAAs. Utah faces Beehive state rival Weber State in Salt Lake City on Jan. 3.
Utah begins its Mountain West Conference schedule with three consecutive road games. The Utes play at San Diego State on Jan. 18 and at UNLV on Jan. 20 before facing arch rival BYU on Jan. 25 in Provo.
The Mountain West Conference sent a record six teams to postseason play in 2001-02, making the conference one of only two leagues in the country to have 75 percent of its teams competing in postseason tournaments. In addition to Utah, Wyoming and San Diego State also played in the NCAA Tournament. BYU, New Mexico and UNLV were invited to the NIT. For the first time in eight years, someone other than the Utes will be the defending league champions. Wyoming edged out Utah for the 2002 Mountain West crown by winning the final game of the regular season, 57-56 on March 2 in Laramie, Wyo. The 2002-03 regular season ends with the Utes and Cowboys squaring off in the Huntsman Center on March 8.
Utah will be featured at least four times on ESPN or ESPN2 and four times on the ESPN Regional "Mountain West Game of the Week." The Utes have one ESPN Big Monday home game during the conference season, taking on BYU on Feb. 24. Eleven additional games will be broadcast locally by KJZZ-TV, the University of Utah's television partner. KJZZ-TV is also the Salt Lake affiliate for the ESPN Regional package. In all, at least 19 games--including 13 of the 14 conference games--will be televised this season.
Once again, the Mountain West will utilize a predominant Saturday-Monday scheduling format. Utah's only Thursday night game during the conference schedule will come the final week of the regular season on March 6 against Colorado State in Salt Lake City. The 2003 Mountain West Conference Tournament takes place March 13-15 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas
"We are very pleased with this year's schedule," said Ute head coach Rick Majerus. "Many people feel that this is the finest field ever to compete in the Maui Invitational. Having been in two prior Maui Classics with the anticipation of many more, I certainly concur with those beliefs. Maui presents a "who's who" of college basketball, and we are pleased to play in the most prestigious of all preseason tournaments. Additionally, our fans will enjoy Alabama and Arizona State coming to the Huntsman Center. Also, we have a difficult West Coast swing to Pepperdine and San Diego which will replicate the schedule of Mountain West play.
"Our seeding in the NCAA Tournament has always been a reward for our having played a very difficult schedule," Majerus continued. "Our RPI last year was a composite 31 rating. There is no way that we would be accorded the seeds in the NCAA Tournament that we have received if our schedules weren't so attractive. I know that the fans appreciate a top 10 team in Alabama, a Pac-10 contender in Arizona State, and fine local Weber State and Southern Utah teams when they visit the Huntsman Center. This ranks among the best schedules that we have ever played and we are looking forward to an unbelievable challenge."
