Utah opens Mountain West Conference play with three consecutive road games. The Runnin' Utes play at San Diego State on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 12:00 p.m. (PST). The game will be televised throughout the West region by ESPN+Plus.
Quickly On Utah
The Utes (11-3) play the last of five consecutive home games and their final nonconference game against Ripon College (9-1) on Monday at 7:07 p.m. (MST) in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game will be broadcast on KALL-910 AM and the Utah Sports Network.
Following a 2-2 start to the season, Utah has won nine of its last 10 and is riding a season-best six-game winning streak. Last week, the Utes upended Saint Mary's College 65-59 on Monday and defeated IPFW 76-59 on Saturday afternoon in the Huntsman Center. Utah is 8-0 at home this season. The Runnin' Utes rank ninth in the NCAA in scoring defense (57.5 ppg).
Three Utes are averaging double figures in scoring. Junior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 200) leads the way in scoring average (12.7 ppg), and is shooting 44.4 percent from three-point range (36-for-81) and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. Junior center Tim Frost (6-10, 236) is second in both scoring (12.5 ppg) and rebounding (4.8 rpg). Senior forward Britton Johnsen (6-10, 210) is third in scoring (12.0 ppg) and first in rebounding (6.8 rpg). Freshman point guard Tim Drisdom (6-3, 203) leads the Utes in assists (3.6 apg) and is shooting 46.4 percent from beyond the arc.
From the Training Room
* Senior forward Britton Johnsen returned to action on Dec. 30 against Alabama. He missed the previous two games due to surgery on Dec. 18 to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb. Johnsen sustained the injury early in the first half of Utah's contest at Utah State on Nov. 17, but finished the game. Johnsen returned to practice on Dec. 27 and has been wearing a splint on his right hand.
* Sophomore guard Marc Jackson has played in the last three games after missing the Alabama game. Jackson resprained his right ankle in practice on Dec. 26 after initially spraining it on Nov. 17. He has missed four games this season due to the injury. Jackson also received stitches on Jan. 6 to close a cut in his forehead caused by a collision with Britton Johnsen during the Saint Mary's game.
Scouting Ripon
Ripon College in an NCAA Division III school in Ripon, Wis., with an enrollment of 975. It competes in the Midwest Conference. The Red Hawks returned three starters and 10 lettermen from last year's team that went 19-7 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Red Hawks are 9-1, losing their first game of the season on Saturday to Lawrence University 79-64 at home. They are 3-0 on the road this season.
Sophomore 6-4 forward Scott Landisch leads the team in scoring (15.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg). Senior 6-2 guard Josh Glocke is second in scoring (14.5 ppg) and is an 84.3 percent free throw shooter. Junior 6-7 forward Andy Kieck is the team's top three-point shooter, hitting 19-of-44 (.432), and is averaging 10.7 points per game. Sophomore 6-0 guard Tom Becker leads the Red Hawks in assists (6.1 apg) and steals (22).
Head Coach Bob Gillespie
Bob Gillespie is 388-145 in 23 seasons as a college coach, spending his entire career at Ripon. Under his guidance, Ripon has had only one losing season while eclipsing the 15-win mark 17 times and the 20-win plateau five, including twice in the past four years. Along with a school-record 23 wins in 1997-98, which included a record 21-game win streak. Ripon has averaged over 17 wins a season in his career.
Currently one of the top 15 active Division III coaches in the country in winning percentage and Ripon's winningest coach ever, Gillespie has created a powerhouse in the Midwest Conference, the midwest region and the nation.
A 1971 graduate of Lewis University, Gillespie began his coaching career at Wausau Newman High School before joining Ripon during the 1979-80 season as an assistant. Gillespie received his master's degree from UW-Oshkosh in 1982.
Jacobson Stroking "J"s
Junior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 200) is Utah's top scorer this season (12.7 ppg) and paces the team in three-pointers made, hitting 36-of-81 (44.4 percent) from beyond the arc.
* Jacobson has scored in double-figures in 31 of the last 44 games dating back to last season.
* Jacobson got into a groove against IPFW on Jan. 11, hitting 6-of-7 three-pointers and 8-of-11 shots from the field to score a season-high 22 points. He tied the second-best single-game mark at Utah for three-pointers, missing the record of seven he shares with Phil Cullen and Phil Dixon. He reached 20 points for the seventh time in his career and the third time this season. Jacobson scored 21 points against both Utah State and UMass.
* Jacobson has already climbed into sixth place in career three-pointers made (144) and sixth in three-pointers attempted (338) at Utah. His career three-point percentage of 42.0 entering this season would have ranked fourth all-time at Utah.
* In the final 2001-02 NCAA statistical rankings, Jacobson was 23rd in three-point percentage (44.4). The Fargo, N.D., native was named third team all-Mountain West and second team NABC/Pontiac All-District 13 in 2001-02. Jacobson led the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) and three-point percentage (44.4). He scored in double figures in 21 of the 30 games last season.
* Also last season, Jacobson set the Utah single-season mark with 71 three-pointers made last season, bettering the mark of 68 by Phil Dixon in 1991-92. He also ranked third in three-point attempts (160).
Frost Formidable Inside
Junior center Tim Frost (6-10, 236) has established himself as a strong interior presence early in his first season with the Utes.
* Frost is second on the team in scoring average (12.5 ppg), reaching double figures in nine games this season, and second in rebounds per game (4.8 rpg). He also has eight blocked shots.
* Frost had season highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds against Saint Mary's on Jan. 6. It was his second double-double of the season and the eighth of his career. Frost shot 7-of-16 from the field and 6-of-6 at the free throw line.
* The junior center had his first double-double as a Ute with 13 points and 10 rebounds against Pepperdine on Dec. 20.
* The Klamath Falls, Ore., native spent the first two seasons of his college career at Portland. He was a first team all-West Coast Conference selection in his final season with the Pilots, averaging 14.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game.
Game #14 Rewind
Nick Jacobson scored a season-high 22 points as Utah won its sixth straight game, defeating Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne 76-59 on Saturday in the Huntsman Center.
Jacobson made 6-of-7 from beyond the three-point line as Utah scored 14 three-pointers, the second best in school history. Tim Frost and Richard Chaney each added 12 points for the Utes (11-3), who have won nine of their last 10 games.
The Utes, who averaged 36 percent from three-point range entering the game, made 8-of-10 three-pointers in the first half and led 46-24 at halftime.
David Simon led IPFW (3-14) with 15 points. The Mastodons have lost nine of their last 10 games.
Utah's quick passing kept the ball one step ahead of the Mastodons' defense, giving the Utes open shots around the perimeter. Utah outscored IPFW 18-0 in points off turnovers in the first half. IPFW led 5-3 before Jacobson capped a 16-4 Utah run with his third three-pointer and Utah led 19-9. Minutes later, Chaney's three-pointer led to nine consecutive points and the Utes were not challenged again.
Utah had a season-high 24 assists and IPFW was well out of reach until the Utes subbed extensively. With two freshmen and two walk-ons finishing the game for Utah, the final score was as close as the Mastodons got in the second half.
The Utes were the sixth Mountain West Conference opponent for the Mastodons, who have lost all their games against MWC teams.
Inside the Numbers
* In six of the 11 wins, Utah has held its opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field. The Utes have outshot their opponents 47.4 to 38.4 percent in its wins. No team has shot 50 percent from the field on Utah this season.
* The Utes have outrebounded their opponents in 10 of the 11 wins. The exception was a 32-30 deficit in the win over Alabama. In its wins, the Utes have outrebounded the opponents by an average of 35.1 to 29.4. Utah had a season-best 48-32 advantage (+16) on the glass in its win over Pepperdine on Dec. 20. In two of the three losses, Utah has been outerbounded. Its average rebound deficit in losses is 34.0 to 30.3.
* The Utes have had the advantage at the free throw line in their eight wins, making 192 trips to the line compared to 180 for the opponents and shooting 70.3 to 68.9 percent. In the three losses, the opposite has been the case with the opponents outshooting Utah at the free throw line 122 attempts to 42, and making 82 (67.2 percent) to 20 (47.6 percent).
Noting The Season
* Utah had a season-best 24 assists against IPFW on 29 baskets. Freshman point guard Tim Drisdom led the effort with a career-best six assists.
* Utah defeated Alabama, then ranked No.1 by the Associated Press and No. 3 by ESPN/USA Today, 51-49 on Dec. 30 in the Huntsman Center. The Crimson Tide were the highest-ranked team to ever play the Utes in the Huntsman Center. The Utes had unseated a top-ranked team once before under Rick Majerus, defeating North Carolina 65-59 on March 28, 1998 in the national semifinals at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
* With their win over Alabama on Dec. 30, the Runnin' Utes recorded the 1,500th win in the history of Utah Basketball. Utah became just the 13th NCAA Division I program with 1,500 wins. Utah's current record is 1,503-779. Its all-time winning percentage of .659 currently ranks 10th-best among all NCAA Division I programs.
* Utah is 1-1 against ranked teams this season, falling to No. 20 Gonzaga 71-52 on Nov. 25 in the first round of the Maui Invitational.
* Utah tied a season-low mark with just nine turnovers in the win over Alabama, including just one in the second half. The Utes also had nine turnovers in the win over Northern Iowa.
* Utah held San Diego to just 12.5 percent from three-point range, its best defensive effort from long range this season.
* Winthrop shot 27.3 percent (15-for-55) from the field, which was the sixth-worst mark by a Ute opponent all-time. It was the Utes' best defensive effort since Concordia shot 20.3 percent, the lowest mark by a Ute opponent all-time, on Dec. 26, 2000.
* Winthrop's 42 points were the lowest allowed by the Utes in 22 games since Saint Mary's (Calif.) scored 35 points on Jan. 7, 2002.
From Beyond The Arc
Utah is shooting 37.7 percent from three-point range, and has hit at least 40 percent of its long-range tries six times and 50 percent or better on three occasions.
* Three Utes are shooting over 40 percent from three-point range: Tim Drisdom (46.4), Marc Jackson (45.5) and Nick Jacobson (44.4).
* The Utes shot 80.0 percent from three-point range in the first half against IPFW, which was the fourth-best mark for a half in school history. Utah's 14 three-pointers made in the entire game tied the second-best effort all-time at the U. The Utes shot 56.0 percent from three-point range in 25 attempts.
* Utah put up 32 three-point attempts against Northern Iowa, which is the second-most in a single game in school history. It was the most three-point attempts by the Utes since firing 34 against San Diego State on Jan. 16, 1999. The Utes made 12 of those 32 attempts (37.5 percent) against UNI.
* Utah shot a season-best 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from three-point range against Winthrop. It was the Utes' best effort since hitting 66.7 percent (12-of-18) last season at New Mexico on Jan. 21. The Utes hit 5-of-10 three-pointers (50.0 percent) against Massachusetts on Nov. 26 in the Maui Invitational.
* A year ago, the Utes ranked eighth in the nation and first in the Mountain West in three-point percentage (40.5), and shot 50 percent or better from three-point range in four games.
Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of a Utah team during the Rick Majerus era is a stifling half-court defense. Since 1989-90, Utah has ranked in the top 30 in the nation 10 times in scoring defense, nine times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.
* This season, Utah ranks ninth in the NCAA in scoring defense (57.5 ppg) as of Jan. 6. Since an 83-79 overtime loss to Arizona State on Nov. 27, the highest point total Utah has surrendered in the next 10 games is 61 points in a win (77-61) over Pepperdine.
* The Utes have held 11 teams under 60 points this season and three teams under 50 points. Alabama scored just 49 points against the Utes on Dec. 30.
* Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 77 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88-61) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.
* An opponent reached the 80-point mark on Utah for the first time in 70 games in its 83-79 overtime loss to Arizona State on Nov. 27.
* Last season, Utah ranked 13th in the NCAA in scoring defense (61.3).
