SALT LAKE CITY - After finishing the 2002 season in second place in the Mountain West Conference, the University of Utah baseball team has been picked to finish fourth in a vote of the conference's six head coaches.
Defending regular season champion San Diego State collected 25 points to capture the top spot in the poll. Brigham Young earned 19 points to place second, followed by UNLV (17 points), Utah (12 points), New Mexico (11 points) and Air Force (six points).
Utah, 33-26 overall a year ago, is coming off its best season in the MWC and second-best season overall. However, the Utes return just two starters from last year's team and welcome 16 newcomers.
The Utes kick off the season at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, against Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo.
