Following a 2-2 start to the season, Utah has won eight of its last nine and is riding a season-best five-game winning streak. In their last two outings, the Utes defeated in-state rival Weber State 72-58 last Friday and upended Saint Mary's College 65-59 on Monday in the Huntsman Center. Utah is 7-0 at home this season. The Runnin' Utes rank ninth in the NCAA in scoring defense (57.5 ppg).

Junior center Tim Frost (6-10, 236) is tied for first in scoring (12.5 ppg) and second in rebounding (5.0 rpg) average. Junior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 200) ranks third in scoring average (12.0 ppg), and is shooting 40.5 percent from three-point range (30-for-74) and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. From the Training Room
* Senior forward Britton Johnsen returned to action on Dec.30 against Alabama. He missed the previous two games due to surgery on Dec. 18 to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb. Johnsen sustained the injury early in the first half of Utah's contest at Utah State on Nov. 17, but finished the game. Johnsen returned to practice on Dec. 27 and will need to wear a splint on his right hand for at least two weeks.
* Sophomore guard Marc Jackson has played in the last two games after missing the Alabama game. Jackson resprained his right ankle in practice on Dec. 26 after initially spraining it on Nov. 17. He has missed four games this season due to the injury. Jackson also received stitches on Jan. 6 to close a cut in his forehead caused by a collision with Britton Johnsen during the Saint Mary's game.
Scouting IPFW
The Mastodons are 3-13 following an 86-80 overtime win over IUPUI at home on Tuesday night. It was just IPFW's third game at home, where they have gone 2-1 this season. Before the win over IUPUI, the Mastodons had lost eight in a row with seven of those games taking place on the road or neutral courts.
A first-year NCAA Division I program that is not a member of a conference, IPFW has already played and lost to five Mountain West teams this season. The Mastodons fell 80-62 at Colorado State on Nov. 16, 91-66 at New Mexico on Dec. 6, 73-62 at Wyoming on Dec. 12, 74-58 at San Diego State on Dec. 30 and 74-62 at UNLV on Jan. 2.
Three players are averaging double figures in scoring. Junior center/forward Jim Kessenich (6-10, 230) leads IPFW in scoring (13.9 ppg) and is second in rebounding (4.8 rpg). Sophomore guard Terry Collins (6-0, 205) is second in scoring and is 32-of-101 (.317) from three-point range. Sophomore Forward Ric Wyand (6-7, 220), who is questionable for the Utah game due to a knee injury, is third in scoring (11.2 ppg). Senior guard DeAngelo Woodall (6-0, 175) leads the team in assists (3.8 apg).
Head Coach Doug Noll
Doug Noll is in his fourth season at IPFW, where he has a 28-73 record. After leading the Mastodons to a 7-21 record last season, he is guiding his team through a full NCAA Division I schedule for the first time this season. Before taking over at IPFW, Noll averaged 21 wins or more in six seasons at Spring Arbor College, an NAIA Division II program. His career record is 160-180 in 11 seasons.
Frost Formidable Inside
Junior center Tim Frost (6-10, 236) has established himself as a strong interior presence early in his first season with the Utes.
* Frost is tied for first on the team in scoring average (12.5 ppg), reaching double figures in eight games this season, and second in rebounds per game (5.0 rpg). He also has seven blocked shots.

* The junior center had his first double-double as a Ute with 13 points and 10 rebounds against Pepperdine on Dec. 20.
* The Klamath Falls, Ore., native spent the first two seasons of his college career at Portland. He was a first team all-West Coast Conference selection in his final season with the Pilots, averaging 14.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game.
Rating the Rookies
With only four lettermen returning from last season and 10 scholarship players on the roster, Rick Majerus has played his freshmen extensively early in the season. Here's a breakdown of how the quartet of Richard Chaney (G/F, 6-4, 186), Tim Drisdom (G, 6-3, 203), Chris Jackson (C, 6-11, 242) and Bryant Markson (F, 6-6, 182) has been producing.
* In the win over Weber State, both Chaney and Markson had career highs in points. Chaney had a game-high 17 points (7-9 FG, 1-2 3FG, 2-4 FT) and four rebounds in 17 minutes. Markson went for 12 points (5-8 FG, 1-3 3FG, 1-2 FT) and four boards in 13 minutes. Figuring in Drisdom's six points, the trio accounted for 35 of Utah's 72 points on 15-for-21 shooting.
* Drisdom, who's started every game at point guard, leads the Utes in assists (3.5 apg) and is fourth in rebounding (3.1 rpg). He is also shooting 44.0 percent from three-point range, making 11-of-25.
* Chaney (7.1 ppg) and Drisdom (5.2 ppg) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, on the team in scoring. Markson (4.6 ppg) is seventh.
* All four freshmen are shooting above 40 percent from the field, with Chaney at 49.3 percent, Drisdom at 46.0 percent, Jackson at 58.3 percent and Markson at 52.2 percent.
Take Note of These Utes
* Marc Jackson had a career-high 10 points against Pepperdine, shooting 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point range. In the next game against San Diego, he had nine points, hitting 7-of-8 free throws, and three rebounds.
* Cameron Koford scored in double figures in back-to-back games for the first time in his college career against Pepperdine and San Diego. Against Pepperdine, Koford had a career-high six blocked shots, 10 points (3-4 FG, 4-6 FT) and a season-high seven rebounds in 21 minutes. In the San Diego game, he had a season-high 12 points, (5-8 FG, 2-2 FT), and six rebounds in 20 minutes. Koford contributed eight points, four rebounds, two blocked shots and two assists in 24 minutes against Weber State. He had three more blocked shots against Saint Mary's to bring his season total to 18.
Game #13 Rewind
Tim Frost posted season-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds as Utah outlasted Saint Mary's of California 65-59 Monday night. Frost, a transfer from Portland of Saint Mary's West Coast Conference, made a putback with 1:20 left to quell a Gaels surge and ensure Utah's eighth win in the last nine games.
Nick Jacobson added 10 points for the Utes (10-2), who have won five straight.
Freshman Daniel Kickert had 21 points and Samuel Saint-Jean had 19 for Saint Mary's. Both marks were career-highs but they didn't get much help. The rest of the team combined to shoot 8 of 22 and committed 13 turnovers. Saint Mary's (7-6) also failed to overcome a 21-9 rebounding deficit in the second half against the physical Utes.
The Utes held Saint Mary's to just six points in a 10:14 stretch of the second half as they built a 13-point lead. Frost, who had six offensive rebounds, scored four points during that 10-3 run that gave Utah a 57-44 lead with 5:09 to play.
The Gaels, who forced Utah into 16 turnovers, caused a couple of Utah miscues with tight defense in a 10-3 surge capped by Adam Caporn's three-pointer to cut Utah's lead to 60-54 with 2:11 to play. But Saint Mary's couldn't get within five points the rest of the way.
Chase Poole, the Gaels' leading scorer, had just four points before fouling out with 2:29 to play. Utah now leads the series 14-2 and has won the last nine in a row against the Gaels.
Inside the Numbers
* In five of the 10 wins, Utah has held its opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field. The Utes have outshot their opponents 47.0 to 38.4 percent in its wins. No team has shot 50 percent from the field on Utah this season.
* The Utes have had the advantage at the free throw line in their eight wins, making 182 trips to the line compared to 154 for the opponents and shooting 72.0 to 67.5 percent. In the three losses, the opposite has been the case with the opponents outshooting Utah at the free throw line 122 attempts to 42, and making 82 (67.2 percent) to 20 (47.6 percent).
* The Utes have outrebounded their opponents in nine of the 10 wins. The exception was a 32-30 deficit in the win over Alabama. In its wins, the Utes have outrebounded the opponents by an average of 35.2 to 29.5. Utah had a season-best 48-32 advantage (+16) on the glass in its win over Pepperdine on Dec. 20. In two of the three losses, Utah has been outerbounded. Its average rebound deficit in losses is 34.0 to 30.3.
Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of a Utah team during the Rick Majerus era is a stifling half-court defense. Since 1989-90, Utah has ranked in the top 30 in the nation 10 times in scoring defense, nine times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.
* This season, Utah ranks ninth in the NCAA in scoring defense (57.5 ppg) as of Jan. 6. Since an 83-79 overtime loss to Arizona State on Nov. 27, the highest point total Utah has surrendered in the next nine games is 61 points in a win (77-61) over Pepperdine.
* The Utes have held 10 teams under 60 points this season and three teams under 50 points. Alabama scored just 49 points against the Utes on Dec. 30.
* Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 76 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88-61) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.
* An opponent reached the 80-point mark on Utah for the first time in 70 games in its 83-79 overtime loss to Arizona State on Nov. 27.
* Last season, Utah ranked 13th in the NCAA in scoring defense (61.3).
Utes Tough At Home In the Huntsman Center
Utah is 187-17 (.917) in the Huntsman Center during the Majerus era and has never lost back-to-back home games. With Majerus on the bench, taking out the games he missed during the 1989-90 and 2000-01 seasons, the Utes are 168-12 (.933) at home.
* The Utes have won 126 of their last 133 games in the Jon M. Huntsman Center, including a 14-2 mark last season and a 7-0 start this season. Utah's current home court winning streak is nine games.
* In conference home games over the past eight years, Utah is 59-2 (.967), which is the best record in the nation over that time span.
* Utah has gone unbeaten seven times in the 33-year history of the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Six of those undefeated home seasons have come under Rick Majerus: 1990-91 (16-0), 1992-93 (15-0), 1994-95 (15-0), 1997-98 (13-0), 1998-99 (14-0) and 1999-2000 (17-0).
* The Utes' all-time record in the Huntsman Center is 419-88. Utah got its 400th win in the history of the facility on Nov. 20, 2001 against Boise State.
