SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team improved to 12-6 overall and 6-1 in the Mountain West Conference with a three-game sweep (30-18, 30-17, 30-24) of San Diego State at Crimson Court tonight. Utah hit for .327 on the match and held the Aztecs to just .033. The Utes also out-blocked San Diego State 11-5.
"We were fortunate to catch them when they were flat -- they played a tough match last night at BYU," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "But we never let them in. We kept the pressure on all night."
Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt led all players with 15 kills on .419 hitting. She also added five digs, two blocks and a service ace.
Senior All-America candidate Kim Turner finished with 14 kills, eight blocks, six digs and one service ace. She hit for .500 on the match.
Junior Lyndsey Henderson notched nine kills on .467 hitting.
Juniors Tracy Neumeier and Kelsie Kartchner split time setting. Neumeier dished out 26 assists, while Kartchner had 14.
Senior libero Jackie Morrill had a match-high nine digs, while sophomore Danielle Leichliter had three service aces.
The Utes led throughout game one, winning by 12 points, 30-18. The Utes hit for .250 on the game, while the Aztecs hit for .053. Sommerfeldt had five kills and three digs on the game to lead Utah.
Utah dominated game two, leading the entire game and building its lead to as many as 15. The Utes hit for .400 on the game and held San Diego State to -.051. Turner and Sommerfeldt had five kills apiece.
The third and final game was the closest of the three, with seven ties and four lead changes. The Utes pulled away in the end, winning 30-24.

Utah travels to Wyoming and Colorado next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25-26, for matches at Wyoming and Colorado State. Saturday's match starts at 7 p.m., while Sunday's match begins at 4 p.m. and will be aired nationally on CSTV.
