This Week
The Utes (1-2) travel to Northridge, Calif., for a three-game series against Cal State Northridge (3-3). Utah faces the Matadors at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, and at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16.
Series Notes
The first meeting between Utah and Cal State Northridge was in 1976. The two teams have played six times, with the Matadors holding a 5-1 advantage. In their last meeting on March 8, 1992, the Matadors won 7-1 in Northridge.
Utah Update
The Utes are 1-2 after winning the third game of the series with Mesa State last weekend. Junior Mike Westfall hit .417 with a triple and four RBI in the series, while senior Mike Basham hit .500 and was 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts.
As a team, Utah hit .423 and was successful on 7-of-8 stolen base attempts. Of the 16 runs allowed to Mesa State last week, only one came after the fifth inning. Conversely, the Utes scored 10 of their 12 runs in the series after the fifth inning.
Scouting the Opposition
Cal State Northridge evened its record at 3-3 after going 2-1 in its series with Nevada last weekend. Matador outfielder Keith Bowman launched a clutch two-run homer in the fifth inning and the Matador pitching staff made it stand up, holding Nevada scoreless in the final 5 1/3 innings as the Matadors held on for a 4-3 last Sunday. Northridge lost the first game of the series 6-2 last Friday and won the second game on Saturday by the same score.
Junior Jesse Perez went 6-for-9 on the series, while McCauley and Simpson both were 5-of-13. Simpson added two RBI.
As a team, Northridge is hitting .318 while holding opponents to .284. First baseman/catcher Randy Akasaka leads the team with seven RBI. He also has three doubles and a homer. Leo Rosales, who is scheduled to pitch on Saturday, leads the team with 14 strikeouts, followed by Friday's starter, Nathan Hochgesang, with 13.

On the Road Again
The Utes will play 18 more road games before hosting Mesa State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 18, at Ute Field.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays its home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area), also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the reigning major-league champion Anaheim Angels.
On Deck
The Utes travel to College Station, Texas, for the Texas A&M Domino's Pizza Classic on Feb. 21-24. Utah plays Creighton at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, UCLA at 10 a.m. and Texas A&M at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, UCLA at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, and Creighton at 1 p.m. and Texas A&M at 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24.
