Utah Update
The Utes are coming off three consecutive wins over Cal State Northridge last weekend. In completing the sweep at Northridge, it was just the second time since the Matadors turned NCAA Division I in 1991 that they have been swept at home. The three games against Northridge were tied at the top of the ninth and Utah went on to win all three games. Senior Jake Jordison was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week after posting a .455 batting average on the week.
On the season, the Utes are led by seniors Mike Basham and Jake Jordison. Basham boasts a .429 batting average and is 6-for-6 in stolen bases. Jordison, the reigning MWC Player of the Week is batting .409 on the year with four doubles, two homers and five RBI. On the mound, freshman Derek Larsen (2-0) has allowed just one hit in 4 1/3 innings. Sophomore Brady Martinez (1-0) has two saves in 3 2/3 innings. Both pitchers boast a 0.00 ERA.
Scouting the Opposition
Creighton - Creighton is coming off a 15-2 loss to Kansas State on Tuesday. The Bluejays fell behind early in the game, giving up eight runs in the second inning. The Jays managed to plate one run in the top of the third with third baseman Gabe Lapito scoring off of a triple by shortstop Mike Siranni. KSU put five more runs on the board in the sixth and two in the seventh. Iowa Western transfer Matt Hammer recorded his first hit for the Jays with an RBI single in the eighth inning. Hammer's right field single scored right fielder Matt Daeges.
The Bluejays used nine pitchers in the loss, giving up 16 hits, while striking out eight. Siranni drove in both Creighton runs, while left fielder Dan Norquist was 2-for-3.
Texas A&M - Aggie Pitchers Brian Finch and Dan Donaldson combined to shutout Sam Houston on Tuesday and lead No. 19 Texas A&M past the Bearkats, 8-0. Finch threw the first six innings and allowed four hits while striking out four to even his record at 1-1. Donaldson, a true freshman, earned the save in his first outing by hurling the last three innings. The Aggies took the lead in the top of the third when they scored three runs on three hits. A two-out RBI single by Cliff Pennington in the fourth plated Justin Pouk to run the A&M lead to four runs. A&M torched Bearkat reliever Dustin Craig for four runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.
On the season, the Aggies are led by Justin Ruggiano and Cory Patton with eight hits and 12 RBI apiece.
UCLA - UCLA dropped a close 7-5 contest at UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday afternoon to fall to 5-6 on the season. The Gauchos struck quickly, scoring two runs in the first. UCLA fought back in the second with three singles, coupled with a hit batsmen, to drive in two Bruins. Santa Barbara took the lead for good in the fourth inning. With the score tied 3-3, a dropped throw by Bruin first-baseman Wes Whisler allowed leadoff hitter Matt Emerick to reach base. The error led the way for four unearned runs to score. Matt Thayer pinch hit for Brett McMillan in the sixth inning and hit a solo home run to bring the score to 7-4. In the eighth, a leadoff double from Billy Susdorf started a late surge. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and would later score on a ground out, bringing the score to 7-5. Gaucho reliever Steve Murlock took the mound in the ninth inning and struck out the side to end the game.
Starting pitcher Hector Ambriz lasted four innings for UCLA allowing seven runs on eight hits, while striking out six. Bryan Beck came in to relieve Ambriz and did not allow a run in three innings of action. Simon threw the last inning and struck out one without allowing a run. Outfielder Adam Simon and Whisler both finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI.
