How can the University of Utah compete with schools boasting warmer temperatures and no snow? It would seem as though the Utes would be at a distinct disadvantage in a sport with a season starting in February.
The situation at the University of Utah is such that the Softball team will not even host a home game until the season is over a month old. Nevertheless, the University of Utah softball team has found ways to maintain success and consistently finish near the top of the conference. In order to achieve that success, the University of Utah erected both athletic and academic facilities to ensure the team can compete with warmer weather schools in recruiting.
The team can practice year-round in the Bubble, a domed, climate controlled practice facility where rain and snow can't interrupt practice. The team also has batting cages set up in the Health and Recreation complex for year-around use. When spring finds its way to Utah, the softball field, erected in 1995 and currently undergoing renovation, is a well-maintained field featuring the same type of infield dirt that the Major League facilities use.
Additionally, the U. boasts the Dee Glen Smith Athletics Center, an Olympic quality training facility filled with state-of-the-art equipment and trainers who are all certified club coaches by U.S.A. Weightlifting.
Finally, the University is proud of the new Kenneth P. Burbidge Jr. Family Athletics Academic Center, which opened in March of 2001. The Burbidge Center's objective is to "accommodate the diverse needs and schedules of Utah's student-athletes through a wide range of individual and group support services, computer technologies and independent study opportunities." This is achieved through a computer lab, a Life Skills/Career Center, academic advising, tutoring rooms and a large study table area. Although the center does not directly help with the on-field success of the softball team, it helps each student-athlete accomplish a much more important achievement, that of graduating from the University of Utah.
So, a few snowy days do not mean the team strikes out in attracting recruits. It means it is still batter up in the warm and toasty indoors.
