This Week
The Utes (9-9, 1-2) host Mesa State (11-15) for a noon doubleheader on Tuesday, March 18, at Ute Field. This weekend, Utah will host New Mexico (15-7, 5-1) for a three-game series at Franklin Covey Field. On Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22, the Utes face the Lobos at 2 p.m. On Sunday, March 23, game time is 1 p.m.
Utah Update
Utah went 1-2 last weekend in its conference opener at San Diego State. The Utes lost the first two games 9-7 and 13-5 before rebounding Sunday with a 9-7 win in 11 innings.
On the season, the Utes are led by seniors Wick Udy and Jake Jordison and junior Jared Pena. Udy is batting .333 with 95 put-outs, while Jordison boasts a .328 batting average with five homers and 125 put-outs. Pena owns a .326 batting average with a team-high 45 assists and a .985 fielding percentage.
On the mound, freshman Derek Larsen is 2-1 with a 0.75 ERA, while sophomore Brady Martinez is 2-1 and boasts a 1.59 ERA. Junior Sean Overholt leads the team with 23 strikeouts.
Scouting the Opposition
Mesa State - The Mavericks are coming off a 15-2 win over Central Washington on Sunday at the Northwest Nazarene Tournament in Boise, Idaho. Mesa State went 2-3 at the tournament, dropping three consecutive games prior to Sunday's win.
Mesa State is led by Ben Thompson, who boasts a .400 batting average, and Mike Johnson, who is batting .378 with 17 RBI.
Nate Miller (2-1) leads the Maverick hurlers with a 2.78 ERA, while Jason Martinez has 34 strikeouts on the year.
New Mexico - Cory Lizarraga's walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning capped New Mexico's come-from-behind 11-10 victory over Brigham Young Sunday to win the series 2-1 and improve to 15-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
The Lobos are led by Sean Murray, who carries a .488 batting average with 33 RBI, Lizarraga, who is hitting .395 with six home runs, and Dusty Young, with a .394 batting average and a team-high 43 hits.
On the mound, Matt Bullen is 4-0 with a 3.15 ERA. James Vermilyea leads the Lobo pitching staff with 39 strikeouts.

Series Notes
* Utah is 4-4 in the last two seasons vs. Mesa State. Earlier this season, the Mavericks took two of three games from the Utes at home in Grand Junction, Colo.
* New Mexico leads the all-time series with the Utes 53-32. Utah went 2-5 last season vs. the Lobos.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays its home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area), also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the reigning major-league champion Anaheim Angels.
Westmoreland Named MWC Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 17-23
Righthander Clay Westmoreland, a sophomore from Mesa, Ariz., was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 17-23. In Utah's win over No. 19 Texas A&M, Westmoreland pitched five of seven innings as the Utes upset the Aggies 4-1 in College Station, Texas. He struck out four batters and allowed just two hits and one earned run over five innings before teammate Ben Buck closed out the game's final two innings.
Jordison Named MWC Player of the Week for Feb. 10-16
Senior first baseman Jake Jordison was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for Feb. 10-16 after posting a .455 batting average as the Utes swept Cal State Northridge, 5-4, 5-4, 7-5. In three games played, Jordison was 5-for-11 from the plate with a double, two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored. Jordison's ninth-inning, two-run home run in game two gave the Utes a 5-3 lead and they held on for the 5-4 victory. He also had a two-run homer in game one.
On Deck
Utah hosts in-state rival Brigham Young for a three-game series next Thursday-Saturday, March 27-29, at Franklin Covey Field. The Thursday game starts at 6 p.m., with Friday's game scheduled for 7 p.m. and Saturday's start time set for 1 p.m.
