SALT LAKE CITY--The University of Utah athletics and communication departments have partnered together to air home softball and baseball games via the internet. The webcasts will be broadcast through the athletics department's website, www.UtahUtes.com. At the website, select the baseball or softball link, then select streaming audio under the follow the Utes' subtitle.
The first broadcast will be Thursday, March 27, at 6:00 p.m., when the Ute baseball team hosts Brigham Young University. The rest of the series, Friday, at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. will also be aired. Softball begins its air time on Friday, April 4, in a single game vs. Long Beach State. Full home schedules for both sports are available at the athletics department's website.
"It's a great addition for the athletics and communication departments. It gives the athletics department worldwide exposure and offers the students hands-on experience. Our goals for the future are to broadcast additional sports besides softball and baseball," says Associate Athletics Director for Marketing Marc Amicone.
Two students from the communication department's specialty reporting class will call each game. The webcasts will include streaming audio, player bios and features and updated stats. Listeners will need to download a free copy of Apple's QuickTime Player found at http://www.Apple.com/quicktime/download and will need a 28.8 kbps modem connection or better to receive the audio.
"The communication department is happy to have the opportunity to provide students with a professional quality experience as they participate in new journalistic partnerships and develop new practices," says Communication Department Associate Professor and Chair Ann Darling. "This course creates an unusual and important experience for our students because it challenges them to blend a variety of journalist skills, like writing and editing, and apply them to the digital environment. It also affords them with a real audience, real broadcasts and real expectations to inform and entertain responsibly. These opportunities and experiences are invaluable for our students and we are grateful to the athletics department for making them available."
