The Utes (11-12, 2-4) host instate rival Brigham Young (7-14, 2-4) for a three-game series at Franklin Covey Field. Utah faces the Cougars at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 28, and at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.
Utah Update
The Utes went 1-2 last weekend in their conference home-opening series vs. New Mexico. Utah fell 12-2 on Friday, won 6-1 on Saturday and dropped Sunday's game 11-6. Earlier in the week, the Utes split a doubleheader with Mesa State, winning the first game 9-7 and falling in the second game 5-4.
As a team, the Utes had five home runs last week, including two apiece for senior Jake Jordison and freshman Ryan Khoury.
Scouting the Opposition
The Cougars posted a doubleheader sweep (8-1, 8-3) of Southern Utah on Tuesday. Anthony Bingham struck out six batters in five innings in game one and received help via a pair of home runs from Kainoa Obrey and Rob Itri. After falling behind 1-0 in the nightcap, Doug Jackson tied the score with a third-inning triple to right-centerfield and scored on an ensuing error. The triple was the 22nd of his career, a record he continues to extend for the Mountain West Conference and BYU.
Last weekend, BYU went 2-1 vs. UNLV.
Quoting Head Coach Tim Esmay
"Both teams have gotten off to a slow start this year, but anytime you play a cross-town rival like this, the games intensify. I'm sure they will be played as if both teams were 6-0 in the conference."
The Series
* The Utes trail the all-time series with the Cougars 84-181-1, but Utah leads 17-15 in games that have been played at home since 1987. Utah went 3-3 last season vs. BYU.
Who's Hot
Junior Wick Udy hit .600 in five games last week. In 15 at-bats, he scored three runs, had nine hits with one double, one triple and four RBI. He boasted a .800 slugging percentage and a .625 on-base percentage. In the field, he had 30 put-outs, six assists and zero errors for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
