The Utes (7-5) travel to Tempe, Ariz., to participate in the Bob Schaefer Memorial Classic, hosted by Arizona State. Utah faces Cal State Northridge (4-14) at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 7, Arizona State (24-1) at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, and Southern Utah (2-2) at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 9.
Utah Update
The Utes' three-game series against Southern Utah, scheduled for last weekend, was postponed due to rain and poor field conditions. The series will be made up at a later date.
The weekend prior, Utah went 3-3 at the Texas A&M Domino's Pizza Aggie Classic. Utah swept Creighton 2-1 and 6-0, split with then-No. 19 Texas A&M 4-1 and 1-5, and dropped a pair of 0-3 games to UCLA. Freshman Jason Price, and juniors Wick Udy and Eric Chevalier were named to the 12-member all-tournament team.
On the season, the Utes are led by Udy and senior Jake Jordison. Jordison boasts a .333 batting average with four doubles, three homers and six RBI, while Udy is batting .323. On the mound, Price (2-0) has allowed just three runs in 11 2/3 innings. Sophomore Brady Martinez (1-0) has three saves and six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings and boasts a 0.00 ERA.
Scouting the Opposition
Cal State Northridge - The Matadors (4-14) are coming off losses to Washington, San Diego State and San Diego in the Clash of the Conferences Tournament last weekend in Lancaster, Calif. After opening the season 3-3, Northridge has dropped 11 of its last 12 games, including a three-game series against the Utes earlier this season.
The Matadors are batting .274 as a team this season, compared to the .300 of their opponents. Junior Mark McCauley boasts a team-high .351 batting average with 20 hits and eight RBI.
Arizona State - The Sun Devils (24-1), who are ranked No. 2 in the ESPN/Sports Weekly poll and No. 4 in the Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA polls, are off to the best start to a season in school history. With an 11-7 victory over Penn State last Sunday, the team's 15th straight win, ASU surpassed the 23-1 start of the 1972 team. The Sun Devils have now scored in double-digits in the last seven games and 14 times overall in 2003, outscoring their opponents 278-96 on the season. With 35 home runs this season, ASU is only three off its entire total of 38 last year.
The Sun Devils are led by Jeff Larish, who posts a .430 batting average with 10 home runs and 51 RBI, and Dustin Pedroia, who is batting .419 on the season and has a team-high 44 hits, including 12 doubles.
Southern Utah - The Thunderbirds (2-2) haven't played since they opened the season with a home split of a four-game series against Air Force on Feb. 14-15. In the first doubleheader, senior lefthander Shane Perkins struck out six and allowed one unearned run on five hits in a seven-inning complete game effort, 3-1, in game one. The Thunderbirds dropped the second game 3-0. In the first game of the second doubleheader, SUU rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 6-5. Air Force then pounded out 10 hits to take the series finale, 9-2.
Senior lefthander Shane Perkins and senior infielder Ty Doezie earned Mid-Continent Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week awards for their play against Air Force. Perkins struck out six and allowed one unearned run on five hits in a seven-inning complete game effort. Doezie hit .571 in the series and sparked SUU's 6-5 comeback win in game three with a two-run double in the seventh inning.
Quoting Head Coach Tim Esmay
"After last weekend, we're ready to play and we're really looking forward to playing in some warmer weather. We're excited about the teams and the level of competition we will face this weekend. Personally, it's exciting to go back. It's always fun to play your alma mater. And for our players with Arizona ties, they will get to play in front of a 'home' crowd in a tournament-like situation."
The Series
* The Utes trail the all-time series with the Matadors 5-4. Utah won all three meetings earlier this season at Northridge.
* Arizona leads the all-time series with Utah 24-5, including the last six.
* Utah leads the all-time series with the Thunderbirds 83-49. The Utes won four of five meetings last season.
On the Road Again
The Utes will play nine more road games before hosting Mesa State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 18, at Ute Field.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays its home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area), also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the reigning major-league champion Anaheim Angels.
Westmoreland Named MWC Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 17-23
Righthander Clay Westmoreland, a sophomore from Mesa, Ariz., was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 17-23. In Utah's win over No. 19 Texas A&M, Westmoreland pitched five of seven innings as the Utes upset the Aggies 4-1 in College Station, Texas. He struck out four batters and allowed just two hits and one earned run over five innings before teammate Ben Buck closed out the game's final two innings.
Jordison Named MWC Player of the Week for Feb. 10-16
Senior first baseman Jake Jordison was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for Feb. 10-16 after posting a .455 batting average as the Utes swept Cal State Northridge, 5-4, 5-4, 7-5. In three games played, Jordison was 5-for-11 from the plate with a double, two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored. Jordison's ninth-inning, two-run home run in game two gave the Utes a 5-3 lead and they held on for the 5-4 victory. He also had a two-run home run in game one.
