At The Plate
Utah hosts Long Beach State (Friday, April 4), UNLV (Saturday, April 5) and San Diego State (Sunday, April 6) in a three-game homestand. The battles with UNLV and San Diego State will be doubleheaders. The Utes were originally scheduled to open home play last week, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Recapping Last Week
Utah opened league play with a doubleheader split against Brigham Young. The Utes opened the first game with a 5-0 lead, but fell apart defensively as they went on to lose 12-6. In the second game, Utah redeemed itself by snapping the Cougars' 12-game winning streak with a 7-2 victory. Heather Bowlin allowed just three hits in the win, while Lynsey Wall ripped her third home run of the season.
On Deck
A doubleheader with in-state rival Utah State kicks off next week. The games will be on Wednesday, April 9, beginning at noon. Utah then travels to Fort Collins, Colo., to face Colorado State on April 11 and Albuquerque, N.M., to challenge New Mexico on April 13. The games are the first of a six-game road swing for Utah.
Scouting The 49ers
Long Beach State completed the weekend with a sweep of UC Riverside, an opponent the Utes will face in May. Lindsey Knoff boasts a 9-6 record with a 1.57 ERA this year. Arleigh Thorpe is second on the team with a .289 average and is first with 10 doubles and 10 RBI.
Scouting The Rebels
UNLV split with Colorado State and New Mexico to start its league season. Jackie Kerrigan has been the Rebels strongest pitcher this season. Kerrigan threw a one-hitter against the Rams last weekend and is 13-9 overall. Lisa Moses pilots the Rebels' plate attack with a .295 average and nine doubles.
Scouting the Aztecs
San Diego State opened conference play with doubleheader sweeps of New Mexico and Colorado State. Bre DeSanta, last year's MWC Pitcher of the Year, leads the Aztec throwers. The sophomore is 12-4, with a 1.06 ERA this year. Jaque Vaca has swumg for a team high .342 average, seven doubles and 22 RBI.
Quoting Stevens
"I was very pleased with our hitting last weekend. Our goal is to continue to grow offensively as the conference season continues. We need to sincerely put our offensive and defensive games together. We had the first game against BYU won, but our defensive wheels fell off. I was happy with the team's effort to come back in the second game after a tough loss."
"This is going to be a key weekend for the conference standings. We are playing UNLV and San Diego State, which was picked to win the conference. We are going to practice a lot this week and go at them."
Ups And Downs
Utah continued to struggle defensively on Saturday. Despite jumping out to a 5-0 lead, the Utes saw the game fall to pieces as they committed six errors en route to a 12-6 loss. Utah's defensive effort improved in the second game against BYU, committing only two errors. Utah has only posted three error-free games. Utah continues to outhit and outpitch its opponents. The team connected for 20 hits in two games against BYU last weekend.
Streaking Utes
Lynsey Wall has a team-high six-game hitting streak going. The highest by a Ute this season is seven by Glennis Donnelly.
Bowlin Lane
Junior Heather Bowlin tossed a three-hitter against BYU last Saturday to earn her fourth win of the year. Bowlin allowed two runs and struck out two. At one point she retired 13 straight Cougar batters.
Wall of Fame

The freshman had a hit in both games, including a deep homer to left field in the second outing. Wall was also strong defensively, grabbing six putouts including a diving grab in foul territory.
