The Utes (18-20, 6-10) play a three-game series at Southern Utah April 21-22. Today's doubleheader begins a 1 p.m., as does tomorrow's single game. All three games will be played at Thunderbird Park.
This weekend, the Utes travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for a three-game conference series vs. New Mexico, at Lobo Field. On Friday, April 25, game time is 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (April 26-27) games begin at 1 p.m.
Utah Update
Utah went 1-2 last week vs. San Diego State. The Utes won the first game 7-2 on Thursday. After Friday's game was postponed due to rain, the teams met in a doubleheader on Saturday, with the Aztecs winning 5-3 and 10-9. The second loss was especially painful, as the Utes had come from behind in the eighth for an 8-5 lead before giving up five runs in the ninth for the loss.
Utah is led this season by sophomore Matt Ciaramella, who is hitting .388 with 52 hits on the year. Senior Jake Jordison leads the team in doubles (13), home runs (10) and RBI (31).
As a team, the Utes are out-hitting opponents .303 to .283. The Utah pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.64 on the year, compared to the 5.29 of opponents.
Scouting the Opposition
Southern Utah - The Thunderbirds moved to 3-1 in Mid-Continent Conference play after taking both ends of a Saturday doubleheader from Chicago State. Southern Utah used a pair of double-digit innings to erase an early deficit and cruise in the opener, 24-8, and rallied for two runs in the sixth inning to outlast the Cougars in a slugfest, 12-10, in the seven-inning finale.
On the season, Southern Utah is being out-hit .338 to .271. The team is led by Tyler Campbell with a .344 batting average, seven doubles and 16 RBI.
New Mexico - The Lobos, who face in-state rival New Mexico State on Tuesday, lost a pair of games to Brigham Young last Saturday to drop to fourth place in the conference standings. Like the Utes and Aztecs, the Cougars and Lobos played a doubleheader Saturday due to the suspension of Friday's game due to rain. New Mexico lost the first game 12-4, while a much closer game two resulted in a 5-4 loss for the Lobos. Last Thursday, New Mexico defeated the Cougars 6-5. During that game, the Lobos' Dusty Young went 0-for-4, ending his seventh-longest hitting streak in NCAA history at 39 games.
Young leads the Lobos with 82 hits, including 23 doubles, and a .404 batting average on the season. Chris Alexander has knocked 20 long balls and has 71 RBI on the year.
