This Week The Utes (19-24, 6-14) play a three-game series at in-state rival Brigham Young this Thursday-Saturday, May 1-3, at Miller Field in Provo, Utah. Thursday and Friday's games begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday's game starts at 1 p.m.
Utah Update
Utah went 1-4 last week vs. Southern Utah and New Mexico. The Utes won the first game of a doubleheader at Southern Utah 4-2 on Monday, before falling 8-4 in the nightcap. Over the weekend, the Utes dropped all three games at New Mexico, losing by the scores 10-5, 14-6 and 12-11. It was the second time this season Utah has been swept by a conference opponent.
Sophomore Matt Ciaramella went 8-for-15 (.533) vs. New Mexico with two home runs (including a grand slam) and seven RBI.
Utah is led on the season by Ciaramella, who is hitting .386 with 61 hits and 37 RBI on the year. Senior Jake Jordison leads the team in doubles (14) and home runs (10).
As a team, the Utes are out-hitting opponents .300 to .296. The Utah pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.98 on the year, compared to the 5.18 of opponents.
Scouting the Opposition
The Cougars (19-20, 11-10) were swept 15-8, 5-4, 11-10 last weekend by UNLV.
On the season, BYU is out-hitting opponents .315 to .302.
The team is led by Ranger Wiens with a .392 batting average, 18 doubles and 32 RBI. Kainoa Obrey is hitting .361 with a team-high 46 RBI.
The Cougar pitching staff is led by Paul Jacinto with a 6-5 record in 14 appearances and a 4.14 ERA. As a team, BYU boasts a 6.09 ERA compared to the 6.61 of opponents.

* The Utes trail the all-time series with the Cougars 84-184-1, including a three-game series loss earlier this season at home.

Wick Udy Johnny Bench Watch
Senior Wick Udy is on the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the top collegiate catcher. Among his highlights this season:
* 18-game hitting streak from Feb. 16 to March 29
* Knocked his first home run of the year in the Utes' win over San Diego State April 17
* Batting .326 with a .984 fielding percentage
Martinez Approaches Relieving Records
Sophomore reliever Brady Martinez, who currently leads the Ute pitching staff with a 2.70 ERA in 15 appearances, has seven saves this season. He needs just one more to tie the school single-season record of eight. In addition, with one save last season as a freshman, he now has eight on his career -- just one away from the Utah record of nine.
Ciaramella Named MWC Player of the Week for April 7-13
Utah center fielder Matt Ciaramella, a sophomore from Salt Lake City, was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for April 7-13 after hitting .579 (11-for-19) on the week and leading the Utes to a 3-2 record. He had a 4-for-5 outing with two doubles and three RBI in the Utes' 7-2 win over the No. 21-ranked Rebels. He was also 3-for-3 with two walks in a game three loss to UNLV.
Westmoreland Named MWC Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 17-23
Right-hander Clay Westmoreland, a sophomore from Mesa, Ariz., was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 17-23. In Utah's win over No. 19 Texas A&M, Westmoreland pitched five of seven innings as the Utes upset the Aggies 4-1 in College Station, Texas. He struck out four batters and allowed just two hits and one earned run over five innings before teammate Ben Buck closed out the game's final two innings.
Jordison Named MWC Player of the Week for Feb. 10-16
Senior first baseman Jake Jordison was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for Feb. 10-16 after posting a .455 batting average as the Utes swept Cal State Northridge, 5-4, 5-4, 7-5. In three games played, Jordison was 5-for-11 from the plate with a double, two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored. Jordison's ninth-inning, two-run home run in game two gave the Utes a 5-3 lead and they held on for the 5-4 victory. He also had a two-run homer in game one.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays its home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area), also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the reigning major-league champion Anaheim Angels.
On Deck
Utah hosts Air Force for a four-game series (making up one game that was postponed due to snow when the Utes played in Colorado Springs, Colo.) next weekend. On Friday, May 9, game time is 12 noon. On Saturday, May 10, the two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon. On Sunday, May 11, game time is 1 p.m.
