SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah's all-conference senior defensive end Jason Kaufusi confirmed today that he will miss the remainder of the 2003 football season due to an injury to his left shoulder. Kaufusi, who underwent arthroscopic surgery in July and has not practiced or played since then, has a redshirt year available to him, which he plans to use next season.
Kaufusi cited a desire to let the shoulder completely mend so that he can play at full strength next fall, something he has never had the opportunity to do in his college career due to injuries to both shoulders.
Upon returning from a Mormon church mission and participating in fall camp in 2000, he was immediately inserted into Utah's starting lineup as a true freshman. Named the Mountain West Conference co-Freshman Newcomer of the Year, he followed that up with first-team all-league honors in 2001-02.
