Ute Review/Preview
Utah enters this season with high hopes to get back on the winning track. Utah finished the 2003 season with a 20-27 overall and 7-9 league record. Glennis Donnelly, Niki Hayhurst and Lynsey Wall were named to the all-Mountain West Conference team, while Melissa Stahnke earned Verizon Academic All-District VIII honors.
The Utes return 12 letterwinners, including six position starters and two pitchers from last year's team. The experience of the returners and the ample talent the newcomers possess makes Head Coach Mona Stevens very optimistic for the Utes' 2004 campaign.
Utah opened the season in nice fashion last fall with wins over powers Nebraska and Washington. The team looks to carry over that success as the spring season begins.
At The Plate
The Utes kick off the 2004 season at the Southern Utah Tournament in St. George, Utah. Utah's first match up is against Loyola Marymount at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 7. At 3:00 p.m. that same day, Utah faces in-state foe Southern Utah. Saturday, Utah battles UC Riverside in the early game at 10:00 a.m., followed by another bout with Loyola Marymount at 12:30 p.m.
Stahnke Kong
Ready to lead the Utah offensive attack is Melissa Stahnke, the Ute career home run leader. The senior holds four single season batting records at Utah and has a shot at breaking the career RBI record (175) held by Cyndee Bennett. Stahnke needs 34 RBI to break the record.
Donnelly Decor
Juco transfer Glennis Donnelly earned all-league honors last season. Donnelly notched a .281 average with 10 doubles and 27 RBI. She was red hot in the fall and will be a key to the Utes' offense and defense this year.
Frosh Alert
The Ute newcomers look to have an immediate impact on the team. Melissa Oakes and Samantha Schroeder, both California natives, will boost the battery's depth. Both offer different looks, with Oakes being a better drop ball pitcher and Schroeder being a better rise ball hurler.
Devina Quintero is expected to see time also. Quintero, who is still recovering from knee surgery, will battle for innings in the outfield. The California native is also a threat at the plate.
Academic Accolades
Five Utes were named to the fall semester honor roll, including Melissa Stahnke who earned Dean's List honors as well.
