Utah closes out its nonconference schedule against Whitworth on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. (MST) in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Utes open Mountain West Conference play at UNLV in its second of three straight ESPN "Big Monday" appearances next Monday at 9:00 p.m. (PST).

Quickly On Utah

Utah (10-3) plays the first of back-to-back home games to close out its nonconference schedule against Pepperdine (5-9) on Monday at 10:00 p.m. (MST) at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game will be televised as a part of ESPN's "Big Monday" and broadcast on KALL-700 AM and the Utah Sports Network. The Utes are 7-0 at home this season.

The Utes have won four in a row and seven of their last eight games. Last week, Utah defeated Southern Utah (78-45) on Monday night at home and Weber State (70-60) on Saturday afternoon in Ogden, Utah.

Senior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 206) leads the Utes in scoring (14.6 ppg), hitting 48.5 percent of his three-point attempts. Freshman forward Andrew Bogut (6-10, 233) is second on the team in scoring (12.3 ppg) and first in rebounding (10.2 rpg). The native of Melbourne, Australia, has six double-doubles this season and is shooting 66.7 percent from the field. Sophomore forward Richard Chaney (6-4, 195) is third in scoring (11.7 ppg), shooting 53.4 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from three-point range. Sophomore guard Tim Drisdom (6-2, 212) leads the Utes in assists (3.8 apg). Senior forward Tim Frost (6-9, 244), who has had two double-doubles, is second in rebounding (4.5 rpg) and fourth in scoring (7.4 ppg).

From The Training Room

* Senior center Tim Frost has been nursing a sore back since the start of fall practice, and was forced to sit out the Southern Utah game after it flared-up on him. Frost returned to the starting lineup against Weber State on Saturday.

Scouting Pepperdine

The Waves are 5-9 overall and 1-4 on the road this season. Pepperdine is coming off a 91-65 loss to Colorado State at the Pepsi Center in Denver on Saturday afternoon. Before then, the Waves went 1-2 at the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii, defeating American (82-69) and losing to Fairfield (60-56) and IUPUI (76-72).

Junior forward Glen McGowan (6-9, 230) leads the Waves in scoring (17.8 ppg) and is second in rebounding (4.5 rpg). Junior guard Terrance Johnson (6-5, 197) is second in scoring (15.3 ppg), shooting 37.3 percent (38-for-102) from three-point range. Sophomore guard Alex Acker (6-5, 190) is the team's third-best scorer (14.4 ppg) and leading rebounder (5.4 rpg). He is shooting 41.5 percent from three-point range (17-of-41) and 82.6 percent at the line. Freshman guard Shaun Davis (5-11, 165) leads the team in assists (4.1 apg).

Head Coach Paul Westphal

Paul Westphal is 42-31 in his third season at Pepperdine. He led Pepperdine to a 15-13 record last season. In 2001-02, he guided the Waves to a 22-9 overall record, a tie for first place in the West Coast Conference with a 13-1 record and the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Westphal went to Pepperdine from the NBA. He coached the Phoenix Suns for three-plus seasons, compiling a 191-88 record and taking the team to the 1993 NBA Finals. He was the Seattle Supersonics' head coach for two-plus seasons beginning in 1998, going 76-71. Before moving to the NBA, Westphal was the head coach at Southwestern Baptist College in Phoenix (1985-86) going 21-9. He was also the head coach at Grand Canyon College in Phoenix (1986-88), posting a 63-18 mark and leading them to the NAIA national title in his final season. As a college player at USC, Westphal was a three-time all-Pac-8 performer and a two-time All-American.

Utah-Pepperdine Series Notes

* The Utes and Waves meet for the sixth time on Monday with Utah holding a 4-1 edge in the series. This is the fourth consecutive year the teams have met as part of a four-game series.

* Last season, Utah won 77-61 on Dec. 20 in Malibu, Calif.

* The last time the teams met in Salt Lake City, Utah defeated Pepperdine 81-74 on Dec. 1, 2001. It was the Utes' second win in the series at home.

* Rick Majerus is 2-0 against Pepperdine. Dick Hunsaker was the acting coach in 2000 when the Utes defeated the Waves in Malibu.

* Pepperdine is the second West Coast Conference team the Utes face this season. The Utes defeated San Diego 82-39 on Dec. 6 in Salt Lake City.

* Utah is 51-17 all-time against West Coast Conference teams and took three of four games last year.

Last Meeting

Nick Jacobson scored 19 points, including 14 in the second half, as Utah beat Pepperdine 77-61 last season on Dec. 20 in Malibu, Calif.

Jacobson hit 9-of-11 free throws and 2-of-5 three-pointers, playing all but one minute. Tim Frost scored 13 and had 10 rebounds to get his first double-double of the season for the Utes. Cameron Koford had a season-high 10 points and a career-best six blocked shots. Marc Jackson was also in double figures with a career-high 10 points and four rebounds.

Alex Acker led Pepperdine with 15 points while Jimmy Miggins added 12.

Pepperdine held an 18-13 lead with 12:53 left in the first half before Utah went on a 9-0 run to take a 22-18 lead as the Waves went scoreless for six minutes. The Utes continued their run, taking a 41-30 lead into halftime.

Pepperdine trailed 44-30 with 19:40 remaining before going on a 13-2 run to get to within 46-43, but would get no closer. The Utes countered with a 23-14 run to take a 69-57 lead with 2:20 remaining to put the game away.

The Utes had a decisive 48-32 advantage on the boards and outshot the Waves 46.3 to 33.8 percent from the field. Utah also held Pepperdine to just 13.6 percent from three-point range.

Jacobson Stroking "J"s

Senior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 206) has been a third team all-Mountain West selection the last two seasons. This season, he leads the Utes in scoring (14.6 ppg), hitting 48.5 percent (32-of-66) from beyond the arc and 82.8 percent from the free throw line.

* Jacobson has already climbed into 20th place in career scoring at Utah with 1,263 points. He is one of just 30 players in the 1,000-point club and currently ranks behind Alex Jensen (1,279 points).

* Jacobson has tallied at least 20 points in each of the of the last four games to bring his season total of 20-point games to five. During this stretch, Jacobson has shot 56.4 percent (31-for-55) from the field and 51.9 percent (14-for-27) from three-point range to average 22.8 points per game. He had a career-high 28 points against Weber State on Saturday, hitting 8-of-12 field goals, 5-of-7 threes and 7-of-7 free throws in 39 minutes.

* With his first three-pointer against Cal State Northridge on Dec. 19, Jacobson took over sole possession of the top mark for career threes made at Utah. He tied Keith Van Horn's mark of 206 three-point field goals against LSU-Jacobson took 103 games while Van Horn needed 122. Jacobson now has 220 career three-pointers. He is also second in three-pointers attempted (509) at Utah, closing in on Van Horn's top mark of 514. His career three point percentage of 42.2 entering this season ranked fourth all-time.

* Jacobson has scored in double-figures in 57 of the last 76 games dating back to the 2001-02 season, including 27 of the 33 games in 2002-03 and nine of 13 games this year.

* His best night from beyond the arc this season was a 6-for-11 effort against San Diego to tie the second-best mark for threes made and equal the third-best mark for attempts in school history.

* Last season, Jacobson set the Utah records for three-pointers made (80) and attempted (189). In 2001-02, Jacobson made 71 threes to rank second on the Ute single-season charts and attempted 160, which is fourth-best all-time. His 44.4 three-point shooting percentage in 2001-02 is the sixth-best in a season at the U.

Boasting Of Bogut

Freshman forward Andrew Bogut (6-10, 233) is second on the team in scoring (12.2 ppg) and first in rebounding (10.2 rpg) while shooting 66.7 percent from the field. Bogut has 10 double-figure scoring games-including six in a row-and seven double-figure rebound games.

* In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Dec. 16, Bogut was 11th in field goal percentage (67.3) and 12th in rebounds per game (11.1).

* Bogut had double-doubles in the three consecutive games against LSU (Dec. 16), Cal State Northridge (Dec. 19) and Colorado (Dec. 23) to bring his total to six for the season.

* Ranking third on the team with 26 assists (2.0 apg), Bogut led the Utes with five assists against both Texas Tech and Utah State to set personal season highs. He had three assists against Weber State on Saturday.

From Beyond The Arc

Utah has connected on at least 40 percent of its three-point field goals in eight games this season-including the last three-winning all of them. Conversely, when the Utes shoot under 40 percent from beyond the arc, they are 2-3.

* Utah has hit at least half of its three-point tries three times this season. The Utes shot a season-best 57.9 percent from three-point range against Southern Utah, hitting 11-of-19. Utah shot 50.0 percent from three-point land (7-of-14) against both Colorado and Stony Brook.

* The Utes had made a three-pointer in 152 consecutive games before going 0-for-8 against Georgia State in a 46-38 win on Nov. 17. The last time Utah didn't make a three before then was during an 0-for-12 outing at Long Beach State on Dec. 5, 1998. Since then, Utah has made a three-pointer in each of the last 12 games.

Ute Items

* Utah has made significant progress at the free throw line. After shooting just 26.8 percent (11-of-41) from the stripe against Stony Brook, Texas Tech and UConn (getting losses in the later two games), Utah has shot 75.3 percent (119-of-158) in the last eight games. The Utes shot a season-best 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the line against Cal State Northridge. Utah is currently shooting 66.4 percent at the line this season.

* Turnovers have been a problem for the Utes, who are averaging 15.5 per game. Utah has had a positive assist/turnover ratio in just three of the 12 games this season. Utah averaged 18.0 turnovers during the first five games, including a season-high 21 against Georgia State in the opener. Since that opening stretch, Utah has improved slightly by averaging 13.9 turnovers over the last eight games. The Utes also had a season-low 10 turnovers with 20 assists (second-best total this season) against Southern Utah.

Utes Tough At Home In The Huntsman Center

Utah is 202-18 (.918) in the Huntsman Center during the Rick Majerus era and has never lost back-to-back home games. With Majerus on the bench, taking out the games he missed during the 1989-90 and 2000-01 seasons, the Utes are 184-13 (.934) at home.

* The Utes have won 140 of their last 148 games in the Jon M. Huntsman Center, dating back to the 1993-94 season.

* More recently, Utah has won eight in a row (including a 7-0 record this season) and 23 of the last 25 at home. Its last loss in the JMHC was to Colorado State on March 6, 2003, which ended a 16-game home winning streak.

* Utah has won 22 consecutive nonconference games in the Huntsman Center, last falling to Utah State (78-65) on Nov. 23, 2001.

* In conference home games over the last nine years, Utah is 65-3 (.956), which is the best record in the nation over that time span.

* Utah has gone unbeaten seven times in the 34-year history of the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Six of those undefeated home seasons have come under Majerus: 1990-91 (16-0), 1992-93 (15-0), 1994-95 (15-0), 1997-98 (13-0), 1998-99 (14-0) and 1999-2000 (17-0).

* The Utes' all-time record in the Huntsman Center is 433-89. Utah got its 425th win in the history of the facility on Feb. 17, 2003 with an 86-80 overtime win against UNLV.
