SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's basketball team has signed two high school seniors and two junior college players to national letters of intent. The announcement came today from head coach Ray Giacoletti.
The Runnin' Utes have signed Lawrence Borha, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound shooting guard from Staten Island, N.Y.; Johnnie Bryant, a 6-foot, 180-pound point guard from Oakland, Calif.; Shaun Green, a 6-foot-7 forward from Olympus High School in Salt Lake City; and Ricky Johns, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard, from Bronx, N.Y.
Borha, a native New Yorker, played last season at Stoneridge Prep School in Moorpark, Calif. He averaged 25 points, six rebounds and four assists, leading the team to a 14-2 record. Borha also played three years at Ralph McKee Technical High School in Staten Island. As a junior in 2002-03, he had one of the highest scoring averages in the state at 32 points a game.
"Lawrence is an athletic wing player who can score the basketball," said Giacoletti. "We really like his work ethic and his love for the game."
Bryant played for San Francisco City College last season, averaging 15 points and four assists per game. He was first team all-Coast Conference while leading SFCC to a 23-6 record. While playing at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, Bryant was named all-state, first team all-Bay Area and MVP of his league. Bryant is expected to earn his associate's degree in December and enroll at Utah for the 2005 spring semester. He will have three years of eligibility starting in the fall of '05.
"We've watched Johnnie play for the last year and I've gotten to know him well over that time," said Giacoletti. "He's a point guard who can really shoot the basketball. He's got a great personality, as well as being a very good basketball player."
Green was the leading scorer in Utah's class 4A as a junior in 2003-04, averaging 22 points and 10 rebounds per game for Olympus High School. He was named first team all-state by the Deseret Morning News and the Salt Lake Tribune, and was an all-region selection.
"Shaun is the first player from the state of Utah to believe in our program, and that's important to us," said Giacoletti. "He's a great shooter with terrific range. Our staff was very excited watching him play this summer. His competitiveness along with his ability to shoot the basketball is a combination you don't find very often."
Johns is a sophomore at Monroe College in the Bronx. He is coming off an excellent freshman season while playing for a successful junior college program. Johns was named region MVP, averaging 19 points, five rebounds and four assists per game in 2003-04.
"Ricky is going to bring experience to our perimeter game right away," says Giacoletti. "He can really score the basketball in a variety of fashions, and has the chance to be a very good at defending in a 94-foot game."
Giacoletti, who took over at Utah last March, is excited about his first group of early signees. "The common denominator between the four guys is that their work ethic and desire to improve their skills is something you don't find as much as you once did," he explains. "All four of them are very good players who will put in the time and work needed to improve as their careers go along."
