SAN FRANCISCO - The University of Utah men's tennis team fell to the University of San Francisco 5-2 on Feb. 23 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The Utes did not capture the doubles point, but earned one win in the effort. At the No. 3, sophomore Nick Coutts and freshman Jason Yap knocked off Andrew Hogan and Timo Kienle (8-6).Utah fought hard at the No. 1 but came up short to San Francisco when senior Roeland Brateanu and freshman Miron Mann lost to Axel Elvik and Mason Fuller (9-7). Sophomore Tomasz Gryzb and freshman Ryan Scott also fell to Van Rillas and Pablo Pire de Almeida (8-4) at the No. 3.
Utah walked away with only two victories in the singles. Brateanu took care of his opponent, Pires de Almeida, in three sets (6-3, 2-6, 6-4). At the No. 4, Coutts fought off Fuller (6-2, 6-4). The loss at the No. 2 came to Gryzb as he fell to Elvik (6-1, 6-3). After a long battle, Van Rillas pulled out a (6-0, 4-6, 7-6(5)) win over Mann. Kienle outplayed Scott (6-1, 6-4) at the No. 5 and freshman Dantley Young lost to Hogan (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 6
The Utes return to action against No. 3 Stanford on Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m.
