Reviewing Last Week
Utah fell to 6-7 overall after going 1-3 at the Palm Springs Tournament hosted by Oregon State last weekend. The Utes dropped their first game 4-3 to Notre Dame. Utah's Melissa Oakes tossed an impressive game, but was credited with the loss despite only allowing one earned run. Utah won its first game of the tournament later on Friday against Coastal Carolina 5-2. Melissa Stahnke and Devina Quintero each homered, while Brianna Gourdin threw a strong game to earn the victory. On Saturday, Utah fell to No. 12/18 Tennessee 4-1. Melissa Stahnke was the only Ute to hit (a home run and single) off Vols' ace Monica Abbot, who struck out 13 Utes. Utah's final game was a wild one. The Utes jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Boston College in the top of the first. BC would answer with two in the latter of the inning and seven more in the second. All of the Eagles' runs in the second were unearned, as Utah committed five errors. Utah would rally to tie the game at nine-all, but BC would knock in a runner in the bottom of the seventh to grab the victory at 10-9.

The Utes will travel to Lawrence, Kan., for the Hampton Inn/Jayhawk Classic March 5-7. Utah will face Kansas on March 6 at 10:00 a.m., followed by Nebraska at 12:15 p.m. On March 7, Utah battles Kansas at 9:00 a.m. and Nebraska at 11:15 a.m.
Ute Notables
Senior Melissa Stahnke seems to be back on track. After a slow start, which included a .267 average over the first nine games, Stahnke has since posted a .583 average in her last four games. The Washington native had no home runs and just one RBI in those first nine games, compared to two dingers and three RBI in her last four games.
Utah has recorded 21 home runs through its 13 games. The school record for homers in a season is 60, which was set by the 2001 team. Something to note is seven different Utes have at least one home run this season, making it truly a team effort.
