Majerus led the Utes to a 17-10 record (.630) in the NCAA Tournament. Utah made it to at least the second round of the tournament all but once under Majerus, winning eight consecutive first round games before losing to No. 5 Indiana-the eventual national runner-up-as a No. 12 seed in 2002. The Utes made it to the Sweet 16 four times, the Elite Eight twice and the Final Four in 1998 during the Majerus era, which began in 1989-90 and ended on Jan. 28, 2004 when he resigned due to health reasons.

Utes Capture MWC Tournament Title For Automatic NCAA Bid
Senior guard Nick Jacobson hit a three-pointer from the NBA three-point arc with 1.8 seconds left, giving Utah a 73-70 win over UNLV in the Mountain West Tournament championship Saturday night and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Utah got past sixth-seeded San Diego State 75-69 in the quarterfinals on Thursday and defeated in-state rival Brigham Young, the No. 2 seed, 54-51 in the semifinals on Friday. It was the Utes' first conference tournament title since winning the WAC Tournament in their final year in the league in 1999. Utes Joined By Two Other Mountain West Teams In NCAA Field
The Mountain West Conference will send three institutions to the 2004 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Regular-season champion Air Force earned an at-large bid, while conference tournament winner Utah garnered the automatic bid. Both the Falcons and Utes will be No. 11 seeds. BYU also received an at-large bid and will be a No. 12-seed, marking the third straight year the MWC has sent three teams to the NCAA Tournament.
No. 11-seed Air Force (22-6, 12-2 MWC) travels to the Pepsi Center in Denver for a first round game vs. No. 6-seed North Carolina (18-10, 8-8 ACC) Thursday. The winner will face either No. 3 Texas or No. 14 Princeton in the second round. The Falcons won the Mountain West regular season crown and will be making their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1962.
No. 12-seed BYU (21-8, 10-4 MWC) also plays in Denver against No. 5-seed Syracuse (21-7, 11-5 Big East) on Thursday. The BYU/Syracuse winner will play either No. 4 Maryland or No. 13 UTEP in the second round. The Cougars are 11-23 in 20 NCAA Tournament appearances. This is BYU's second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars were also a No. 12 seed last year and fell to fifth-seed Connecticut (58-53) in Spokane, Wash.

Frost Bouncing Back From Back Injury In Final Season
Senior center Tim Frost (6-9, 244) had earned all-Mountain West Conference honorable mention this season. Frost established himself as a strong interior presence in his first season with the Utes, earning second team all-Mountain West honors in 2002-03. However, Frost has been dealing with a sore back since the start of fall training, missing the first month of practice and the first game of the regular season. He has missed four games in all due to the injury, but has started the last 17 games.
* Currently, Frost is fourth on the team in scoring average (9.1 ppg) and second in rebounding average (4.6 rpg).

Utes Reach 20-Wins Mark Once Again
Utah has hit the 20-wins mark for the 12th time in the last 15 years, spanning the Rick Majerus era. Two of the three years the Utes failed to get 20 wins, Majerus did not coach the entire season. The last time Majerus missed games was in 2000-01 when Utah finished 19-12.
Utah's 20-win seasons at Utah since the beginning of the 90s: 1990-91 (30-4), 1991-92 (24-11), 1992-93 (24-7), 1994-95 (28-6), 1995-96 (27-7), 1996-97 (29-4), 1997-98 (30-4), 1998-99 (28-5), 1999-2000 (23-9), 2001-02 (21-9), 2002-03 (25-8), 2003-04 (24-8).
Ute Items
* Utah has shot 50 percent or better from the field in 12 games this season, going 11-1. Utah ranked 20th in the NCAA in field goal percentage (48.0) as of March 9. Currently, the Utes are still shooting 47.4 percent from the field.
* Utah has shot at least 40 percent from the field in 21 of the past 23 games. The Utes broke a string of shooting at least 40 percent from the field in 21 of 22 games-including nine consecutive games-against UNLV in the MWC Tournament championship game. Utah shot 37.1 percent against the Runnin' Rebels, its lowest shooting percentage in a win this season.
* The Utes are 20-1 when scoring at least 60 points this season with their only loss coming to Wyoming (74-65) on Feb. 16. Utah is 17-1 when holding its opponents to under 60 points with its only loss coming to Air Force (59-57) on Feb. 21.
* Utah's third-place conference finish is its lowest since tying for fifth in 1994. Since then, Utah has won at least a share of eight regular-season conference titles and had one second place finish (2002).
* Utah has lost just once when leading at the half and with 5:00 remaining this season. That set-back came against Air Force on Feb. 21.
* Utah has been held below 20 points in the first half five times this season: 13 points (UConn on Nov. 28), 18 points (New Mexico on Jan. 24), 19 points (LSU on Dec. 16, BYU on Jan. 31, BYU on Mar. 1).
* Utah has made significant progress at the free throw line. After shooting just 26.8 percent (11-of-41) from the stripe against Stony Brook, Texas Tech and UConn (getting losses in the later two games), Utah has shot 75.6 percent (341-of-451) in the last 24 games. The Utes shot a season-best 97.1 percent (11-of-12) in games with over 10 attempts from the line against Whitworth. Utah also shot 90.5 percent (19-of-21) from the line against UNLV on Feb. 9 for its second-best effort in 2003-04. Utah is currently shooting 71.8 percent at the line this season.
Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of a Utah team during the last 15 years has been a stifling half-court defense. Since 1989-90, Utah has finished in the top 30 in the nation 11 times in scoring defense, nine times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.
* In the NCAA statistical rankings released on March 9, Utah ranked sixth in the nation in scoring defense (56.7 ppg), 34th in field goal percentage defense (40.3) and fourth in rebound margin (+7.7 rpg). Currently, the Utes are allowing their opponents to score 57.3 points per game and shoot 41.1 percent from the field, while Utah is outrebounding its foes by 7.6 boards per game.
* The Utes have outrebounded 29 of 32 opponents this season and are 24-5 when they have the advantage on the boards. Utah has outrebounded 22 of its last 23 opponents. The only exception was Wyoming, which posted a 37-33 advantage on the Utes on Feb. 16. The Utes have since outrebounded their last eight opponents.
* Utah has held 15 of its 32 opponents to lower than 40 percent shooting from the field and 13 teams to under 30 percent from three-point range. Savannah State shot 18.2 percent against the Utes on Dec. 13, which is the lowest mark for a Utah opponent all-time.
* Only 14 of 32 teams have reached 60 points against the Utes and 10 opponents have been held to under 50 points this season.
* Only five times has Utah allowed a team to shoot 50 percent or better from the field this season: UConn (62.3), New Mexico on Jan. 24 (53.5), Air Force (55.3) on Jan. 26, Air Force (54.3) on Feb. 21 and UNLV (50.0) on March 13. UNLV was the only team Utah defeated.
* Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 127 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.
Strong At The Finish
The Utes have outscored 24 of their 32 opponents in the second half and are 11-2 in games decided by 10 points or less in 2003-04 (only losses to Wyoming on Feb. 16 and Air Force on Feb. 21). In Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament play, Utah outscored 13 of its 17 opponents in the second half. Utah has finished off 12 close games in the final eight minutes for wins this season. Here's a look at some of the Utes' finishes since the start of league play.
* Utah battled back from a 41-33 halftime deficit to take a 64-57 lead with 6:58 remaining against UNLV in the MWC Tournament title game. The Rebels came back to get within one point with 5:04 left but never led. Utah won 73-70.
* Tied 43-all with 6:25 remaining against BYU in the MWC Tournament semifinals, Utah closed the game on an 11-8 run to win 54-51.
* Trailing San Diego State 65-62 with 4:00 left in the MWC Tournament quarterfinals, the Utes outscored the Aztecs 13-4 to close out the game and made 9-of-11 free throws.
* Leading 59-50 with 4:42 to play in its final regular-season game at San Diego State, Utah score six unanswered points over the next three minutes and won 66-53.
