Utah Update
The Utes (1-8) traveled to New Orleans last weekend to play a three-game series at Tulane. Ranked No. 7 in the nation, Tulane came out strong with a 3-0 win over the Utes in the first game. On Saturday, Utah was out-hit 12 to 4 and suffered a 7-0 loss. In the last game of the series the Utes experienced a shut out for the third straight game with a 9-0 loss.
Scouting the Opposition
Southern Utah
The Thunderbirds (2-5) split a doubleheader last Tuesday with Mesa State. SUU took the first game 5-4, thanks in part to the performance of catcher Mike Martin, who had three hits and three RBI. In the second game, Mesa State, the No. 10 team in Division II, won 3-2, despite the fact that they were out-hit 7-6. Southern Utah was led by junior infielder Jason Ruiz with two hits. In six innings, senior pitcher Chris Mower struck out four while allowing three runs on six hits. The Thunderbirds have played all seven games on the road.
Central Michigan
The Chippewas (1-2) opened the 2004 season with a three-game set with East Tennessee State last weekend. CMU split the doubleheader Saturday, losing the first game 14-2 and winning the second game 12-5. In the opener, Kurtis Wells was the lone Chippewa with two hits in the game. CMU slammed out 15 hits off three ETSU pitchers in game two. Redshirt freshman Jayson Ruhlman pitched six innings for Central Michigan, allowing two hits and three runs, all unearned, while walking three and striking out eight. In the last game of the series, CMU lost 13-3. The Chippewa's started the game out slow going down 5-0 after two innings. Ty Dunham started the game on the mound, allowing nine hits and seven runs in five innings.

Utes Picked to Finish Fourth in MWC
Utah tied with New Mexico to finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference in the preseason coaches poll. The Utes and the Lobos collected 12 points apiece in the poll. UNLV, last year's regular-season and tournament champion, received four of the six first-place votes and collected 24 points to capture the top spot in the poll, followed by San Diego State with 22 points. Brigham Young earned 15 points to place third. Air Force ranked sixth with five points.
On the Road Again
The Utes will play nine more road games before hosting Brigham Young for a three-game series Thursday-Saturday, March 25-27, at Franklin Covey Field.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays the majority of its home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.
On Deck
The Utes travel to Stockton, Calif., for a three-game series at Pacific next Friday-Sunday, March 12-14. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m. (PDT), while the Saturday and Sunday games begin at 1 p.m. (PDT).
