Utah Update
Utah went 3-0 last week with two wins over Southern Utah and a victory over Central Michigan. On Thursday, the Utes belted off 20 hits, including seven home runs by six different players, in a 14-3 rout of Southern Utah. In all, seven Utes finished with multi-hit games, led by Trevor Eastman, who went 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs. Sophomore southpaw Jason Price (1-2) earned the win on the mound, pitching the entire game and giving up just three runs on four hits. He also struck out a career-high 12 batters.
On Friday, Utah scored six runs on 12 hits for a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Southern Utah. Junior Doug Mackay (1-3) earned the win on the mound. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up five runs, two of which were unearned, on four hits. He struck out 10 batters and walked two. Senior Michael Westfall, Jr. went 2-for-3 on the day with one run and one RBI, while Matt Ciaramella was 3-for-5, scoring one run and driving in another. Eastman went 2-for-4 as the only other Ute with a multi-hit game.
In the third and final game, Utah rattled off 16 hits en route to a 14-10 win over Central Michigan. Freshman Travis Kohn (1-1) earned the win on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings. He gave up just one hit while striking out five and walking one. Senior Jared Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with four runs and five RBI.
Scouting the Opposition
Pacific went 1-2 last weekend in a three-game series against San Francisco. The Tigers opened the series with a 3-1 loss on Friday. Tigers' starter senior Andy Willick suffered the loss, falling to 2-2 on the season. He went five and a 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and two runs, while striking out seven. Junior Jordan Seiber and freshman Mark McLaughlin both went 2-for-4 to pace the Tiger offense. Pacific finished with seven hits in the game.
In game two, senior Aaron Harper hit a game-winning RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the 13th inning to give Pacific a 3-2 win over San Francisco in 13 innings. Junior starter Alex Graham went seven and 1/3 innings, while allowing 10 hits, two runs and striking out eight. Gregg Reynolds earned the win, his first of the season. Brandon Gottier and Isaiah Lilly both finished with two hits each to pace the Tigers attack as Pacific finished with 10 hits.
On Sunday, Pacific fell 8-6. Freshman Mike Mathews (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks in two innings. Aaron Harper and Lilly both went 2-for-4 to lead the Tiger offense.

Pena Named MWC Player of the Week
Senior shortstop Jared Pena was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for March 1-7 after leading the Utes to a 3-0 record last week. Pena hit .571 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the week. He also had a stolen base on his only attempt. In the first game against Southern Utah, he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In the second game vs. the Thunderbirds, Pena was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. On Saturday, Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and five RBI.
Utes Picked to Finish Fourth in MWC
Utah tied with New Mexico to finish fourth in the MWC in the preseason coaches poll. The Utes and the Lobos collected 12 points apiece in the poll. UNLV, last year's regular-season and tournament champion, received four of the six first-place votes and collected 24 points to capture the top spot in the poll, followed by San Diego State with 22 points. Brigham Young earned 15 points to place third. Air Force ranked sixth with five points.
On the Road Again
The Utes will play six more road games before hosting Brigham Young for a three-game series Thursday-Saturday, March 25-27, at Franklin Covey Field.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays the majority of its home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.
On Deck
The Utes open conference play with a three-game series at New Mexico next Friday-Sunday, March 19-21. Friday and Saturday's games starts at 6 p.m., while the Sunday game begins at noon.
