The Utah baseball team (10-19, 3-7) hosts UNLV (22-13, 9-3) for a three-game series this Friday-Sunday, April 16-18, at Franklin Covey Field. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., while the Saturday game begins at 1 p.m. and Sunday's game will be played at noon.

Utah Update
Utah never trailed in a 4-2 victory over Albertson College in the first half of a doubleheader at Ute Field Tuesday. Junior Shad McCord (1-0) got the win on the mound, throwing 3.0 innings, giving up two hits, while striking out four and walking one. Senior Eric Chevalier went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Matt Ciaramella was 1-for-3 with three RBI.
In the nightcap, Utah won 6-4 as freshman Travis Kohn (2-4) collected the win on the mound, pitching 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out three. Junior Clay Westmoreland earned his second save of the day and fourth of the season. He threw 1.0 inning, walking one and striking out one. Ciaramella went 2-for-3 with one run and three RBI, while Chevalier was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Scouting the Opposition
UNLV dropped a pair of games against Arizona this week, 11-2 and 10-9. On Tuesday night, the Rebels gave up six runs in the top of the sixth inning, in what had been a 1-1 game. Rebel starter Matt Wagner suffered the loss, despite giving up just three runs on three hits in five innings. After that, the Rebel pitching staff combined for 12 walks, a hit batsman, a wild pitch and two passed balls. Ryan Kowalski finished the night 3-for-4 with one RBI while Peter White was 2-for-4.
In the second game on Wednesday, UNLV led 9-3 in the fifth, but the Wildcats scored seven unanswered runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings for the win. Ty Soto finished 2-for-4 with five RBI, while Eddie Gill was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Right-hander Matt Wagner threw 5.1 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits, while striking out three and walking two. Ben Schienbaum (5-4) pitched in relief was charged with the loss.

Ciaramella Going Long
In the past seven games, a span of eight days, junior Matt Ciaramella has five of his six home runs on the season. The center fielder hit two in the nightcap against Southern Utah on April 6, and one each in the April 9 and 10 games against New Mexico, as well as the second game against Albertson College on Tuesday. With at least 27 games left this season, Ciaramella has already matched his long ball total from last year.
Chevalier Takes 31-Game MWC Hitting Streak into UNLV Series
Senior outfielder Eric Chevalier takes a 31-game MWC hitting streak into the New Mexico series this weekend. Chevalier had hits in each of the final 21 conference games last year and all 10 this season.
Buck Named MWC Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11
Ben Buck was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11. Buck, a senior from Thornton, Colo., went 1-0 in three appearances last week. In a doubleheader against Southern Utah, he pitched 2.0 innings of relief, giving up just two hits, while striking out three. On Friday, he pitched one inning of relief in the second game of the series against the Lobos, giving up one hit. The following day, he threw a complete-game win, pitching all nine innings, giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits. For the week, Buck pitched 12.0 innings, giving up just one earned run on nine hits for 0.75 ERA.
Pena Named MWC Player of the Week for March 1-7
Senior shortstop Jared Pena was named the MWC Player of the Week for March 1-7 after leading the Utes to a 3-0 record on the week. Pena hit .571 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the week. He also had a stolen base on his only attempt. In the first game against Southern Utah, he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In the second game vs. the Thunderbirds, Pena was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. On Saturday, Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and five RBI.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays the majority of its conference home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.
