SALT LAKE CITY--The Utah baseball team fell to 10-20 on the year, 3-8 in league play, after falling 19-17 to UNLV (23-13, 10-3 league) on Friday night at Franklin Covey. The offensive outpouring showcased both teams' offenses, but in the end the Rebels would score eight runs in the final two innings to grab the win.
Utah took advantage of the UNLV pitching in the first. Ryan Khoury reached first to lead off the inning after being hit by a pitch. The Utes would load the bases before Trevor Eastman drew a walk to bring in Khoury.
Utah poured out four more runs in the second after Eric Chevalier ripped a grand slam. The hit extended Chevalier's conference hitting streak to 32 games. UNLV would answer in the top of the third with four of its own runs to make it a 5-4 game. But, Utah responded with another six in the latter of the inning to stretch the lead to 11-4. Matt Ciaramella's three-run triple equaled half of the runs in the inning. The others came from an RBI triple by Jared Pena and RBI singles by Jake Waldram and Jay Brossman.
Both teams would continue the offense, equaling a 12-5 game after five. In the sixth, the Rebels scored four more to cut it to 12-9. After Utah added one more in the bottom of the inning, UNLV scored two in the seventh and three in the ninth to take its first lead of the game at 14-13. Utah committed a costly error that kept the inning alive for the Rebels, as Utah would have taken a 13-12 victory.
The Utes answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 14-14. The run came when Ciaramella drove a sacrifice fly to center field to score Khoury, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
The Rebel offense continued to click at the right time, scoring five runs in the 10th. The Utes staged a rally, but were only able to bring in three runs, making for a 19-17 loss. With two outs and two on, Chevalier sent a ball just shallow of the warning track for the final out.
Jason Price started the game for Utah. Price gave up 12 hits over 5.1 innings, allowing nine runs. Clay Westmoreland (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (four earned) over two innings.
Ciaramella led a group of seven Utes with multi-hit games. He went 3-for-5 with one run scored and five RBI. Tyson Olson and Brossman added three hits apiece.
