Utah Update
For the first time all season, Utah took two of three games in a Mountain West Conference series, going 2-1 against San Diego State last weekend. In the series opener, Utah committed two costly errors that resulted in three unearned runs in a 3-2 loss. Sophomore Jason Price (2-6) suffered the loss on the mound. He threw 6.1 innings, giving up three runs, all unearned, on four hits. He struck out seven and walked four. Matt Ciaramella led the Utes at the plate, going 2-for-2 with one run and two RBI.
In the second game on Saturday, Utah nearly doubled the Aztecs in hits (15 to 8) and hung on to win 7-6. Senior Ben Buck earned the win on the mound, pitching one inning, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out one. Junior Clay Westmoreland earned the save. Jared Pena led Utah at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one run and four RBI, including the game winner. He was one of six Utes with multi-hit games.
In Sunday's finale, the Utes won 9-4, rattling off 16 hits. Buck (3-2) earned the win on the mound, his second in as many days. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, while striking out two and walking four. Westmoreland earned his second save in a row, throwing three perfect innings, giving up no runs on no hits, while striking out three. Senior Michael Westfall, Jr. went 4-for-5 at the plate with one run and one driven in, while Ryan Khoury was 4-for-6 with two runs and one RBI.
Scouting the Opposition
UVSC swept Weber State last Saturday, pounding the Wildcats 16-5 and 9-4. With the wins, the Wolverines extended their winning streak to eight games. In the first game, Dan Bulow led UVSC at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI on a double and two homers. Brady Drake (4-2) earned the win, giving up five runs on nine hits five innings.
In game two, the Wolverines scored nine runs on eight hits, aided by six walks. Adam Hutchinson hit a grand slam, while Jeff Boradhead was 2-for-4. Jed Jensen (3-3) earned the victory on the mound, pitching seven innings. He gave up just two runs on six hits.

Ciaramella Named MWC Player of the Week for April 19-25
Junior center fielder Matt Ciaramella was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for April 19-25 after helping Utah take two if three games at San Diego State as he belted five doubles and a home run vs. the Aztecs. Ciaramella started the week with a home run, a run scored and two RBI vs. Utah Valley State. In a one-run loss to SDSU in the series opener, he was 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and two RBI. In game two, he hit a pair of doubles, drove in two runs and scored another as Utah won 7-6. In the series finale, Ciaramella hit two more doubles, drove in another two runs and scored twice in a 9-4 victory. For the week, he hit .438 (7-for-16) with eight RBI, five runs scored, five doubles and two home runs.
Buck Named MWC Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11
Ben Buck was named MWC Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11. Buck, a senior from Thornton, Colo., went 1-0 in three appearances. In a doubleheader against Southern Utah, he pitched 2.0 innings of relief, giving up just two hits, while striking out three. He pitched one inning of relief in the second game of the series against the Lobos, giving up one hit. The following day, he threw a complete-game win, pitching all nine innings, giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits. For the week, Buck pitched 12.0 innings, giving up just one earned run on nine hits for 0.75 ERA.
Pena Named MWC Player of the Week for March 1-7
Senior shortstop Jared Pena was named the MWC Player of the Week for March 1-7 after leading the Utes to a 3-0 record on the week. Pena hit .571 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the week. He also had a stolen base on his only attempt. In the first game against Southern Utah, he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In the second game vs. the Thunderbirds, Pena was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. On Saturday, Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and five RBI.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays the majority of its conference home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.
On Deck
Utah travels to instate rival Brigham Young for a three-game series this Thursday-Saturday, April 29-May 1, at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo, Utah. The Thursday and Friday games start at 7 p.m., while Saturday's game begins at 6 p.m.
