SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The University of Utah men's tennis team, seeded No. 5, upset No. 4 seeded BYU 4-3 in the first round of the MWC Championships on Thursday, April 29 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
The Cougars claimed the one point lead by sweeping 2 of 3 doubles matches. However, the Utes came back in the singles with four victories. Tomasz Gryzb defeated Richard Dasek (7-6 (5), 6-3) at the No. 2. Miron Mann picked up a (6-4, 6-4) win over Chip Hand at the No. 3 and Jason Yap downed Ivan Kokurin (6-3, 6-1) at the No. 5. At the No. 6, Ryan Scott crushed Alonso Medina (6-1, 6-1).
In the second round, the Utes will battle No. 1 seeded New Mexico on Friday, April 30 at 11:00 a.m.
