SALT LAKE CITY - Former Ute catcher and designated hitter Chris Shelton, an All-American and the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year in 2001, has been named to the 25-man roster of Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers.
Shelton was drafted in the 30th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates following his junior season in 2001. In his only season as a Ute, Shelton led the team in batting average (.374), runs (63), hits (82), doubles (22), home runs (19) and RBI (66). He was twice named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week en route to being named the league's MVP.
Shelton played two seasons at Salt Lake Community College, and led the Scenic West Athletic Conference in hitting in 2000 with a .415 average. He was the 2000 SLCC team MVP with 54 runs, five home runs and 39 RBI. He also had 18 doubles, two triples, and stole seven bases in nine attempts.
In 1999, Shelton hit .362 with 13 home runs and 52 runs driven in. He had 12 doubles and three triples.
