Utah Update
The Utes were only able to play one of three against Air Force last weekend due to snow, but Utah rattled off a season-high 20 hits and eight Utes had multi-hit games en route to the 13-6 win on Friday. Jason Price (2-4) got the win on the mound. He threw seven innings, giving up five runs on 12 hits, while striking out 11. Junior Tyson Olson finished the day 3-for-5 with one run and four RBI, while freshman Jay Brossman, in just his third start, was 3-for-5 with two runs and three driven in. Senior Eric Chevalier extended his MWC hitting streak to 27 games as he was 3-for-5 with four runs and one RBI.
Scouting the Opposition
Southern Utah has been idle since a March 23 extra-innings loss to UNLV. The Thunderbirds scored two unanswered runs in the bottom of the ninth to pull even, but UNLV's Eric Nielsen delivered a two-out, bases-loaded triple to lift the Rebels to a 10-7 win. Southern Utah lost despite tying a season-high with 15 hits, including a 4-for-6 day for Kory Drew who doubled twice and had two RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. Thunderbird starter Justin Abbott struck out four in eight innings of work, allowing seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits and three SUU errors.

Previous Meetings
Utah and Southern Utah played two games earlier this season, with the Utes taking both games, 14-3 and 6-5. In the first game, Utah belted off 20 hits, including seven home runs by six different players. Sophomore southpaw Jason Price earned the win on the mound, pitching the entire game and giving up just three runs on four hits. He also struck out a career-high 12 batters. In all, seven Utes finished with multi-hit games, led by Trevor Eastman, who went 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs.
In the second game, the Utes scored six runs on 12 hits for the come-from-behind victory. Junior Doug Mackay earned the win on the mound. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up five runs, two of which were unearned, on four hits. He struck out 10 batters and walked two. Junior Clay Westmoreland got his first save of the year. He threw one scoreless inning, giving up just one hit and striking out two. Senior Michael Westfall, Jr. went 2-for-3 on the day with one run and one RBI, while Matt Ciaramella was 3-for-5, scoring one run and driving in another.
Chevalier Has 28-Game MWC Hitting Streak
Senior outfielder Eric Chevalier is currently on a 28-game MWC hitting streak. He had hits in each of the final 21 conference games last year and all seven this season.
Pena Named MWC Player of the Week
Senior shortstop Jared Pena was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for March 1-7 after leading the Utes to a 3-0 record last week. Pena hit .571 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the week. He also had a stolen base on his only attempt. In the first game against Southern Utah, he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In the second game vs. the Thunderbirds, Pena was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. On Saturday, Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and five RBI.
Utes Picked to Finish Fourth in MWC
Utah tied with New Mexico to finish fourth in the MWC in the preseason coaches poll. The Utes and the Lobos collected 12 points apiece in the poll. UNLV, last year's regular-season and tournament champion, received four of the six first-place votes and collected 24 points to capture the top spot in the poll, followed by San Diego State with 22 points. Brigham Young earned 15 points to place third. Air Force ranked sixth with five points.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays the majority of its conference home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.
On Deck
Utah hosts New Mexico for a three-game series this Thursday-Saturday, April 8-10, at Ute Field. The Thursday and Friday games begin at 2 p.m. and Saturday's game starts at noon.
