At The Plate
Utah hosts Utah Valley State College on Tuesday, April 6, in a single game beginning at 3:00 p.m. This will be the first of two bouts between the two teams this year. The second game will be at Ute Field on Tuesday, April 27.
On Deck
On Friday, Utah will host Southern Utah at 3:00 p.m. at Ute Field. Then on Saturday, Utah travels to Provo, Utah, for a doubleheader battle with Brigham Young beginning at 2:00 p.m. Both teams are tied with San Diego State and UNLV for first place in the conference with 2-2 records.
The Last Time Out
The Utes began their home season on Tuesday, March 30 when they played host to in-state rival Utah State. Aided by a perfect 3-of-3 day at the plate by Devina Quintero, Utah grabbed a 4-2 victory. Utah would go on to split doubleheaders with conference foes UNLV and San Diego State on Friday and Saturday to post a 3-2 record on the week. Quintero and Lynsey Wall led Utah at the plate for the week, batting .533 and .562, respectively. Brianna Gourdin picked up all three of Utah's victories in the circle.
Quoting Head Coach Mona Stevens
"The difference between our wins and our losses last week was our pitching. Brianna Gourdin threw very well, and we haven't even seen the best of her yet."
Ute Notables
Sophomore Lynsey Wall seems to be enjoying conference play as much as anybody. Wall had posted a .119 batting average with two home runs during non-conference play. In Utah's four league games last weekend, the Farmington, Utah, native compiled a .571 average with three homers.
Brianna Gourdin improved to 8-3 on the year after going 3-0 last week. The sophomore has a 1.38 ERA in her eight wins, compared to a 5.58 ERA in her three losses.
As a team, Utah is hitting .310 in its 10 wins, compared to .194 in its 21 losses. The team ERA is 1.60 in the victories and 4.99 in the losses.
