At The Plate
Utah hosts in-state foe Southern Utah in a single game battle Friday, April 10 beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Ute Field. The Utes then travel to Provo, Utah, to face in-state rival Brigham Young on Saturday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. The Utah versus BYU bout is a doubleheader.
On Deck
Utah begins a three-city road swing as it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., Fort Collins, Colo., and Logan, Utah. Utah faces New Mexico in a conference doubleheader April 16 at 1:00 p.m. in Albuquerque. Then on April 18, the Utes face Colorado State in Fort Collins, in a league doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. The Utes return to Utah, but not to Salt Lake City for play, as they travel to Logan for a single game against Utah State on April 20 at 3:00 p.m.
The Last Time Out
The Utes improved their home record to 4-2 with an 8-5 victory over Utah Valley State College on Tuesday. It was the first time the two teams have met, with UVSC moving up to the Division I ranks this year. Ivette Hernandez piloted the Utes with two home runs and a double. Brianna Gourdin picked up the victory to make her 9-3 this year.
Quoting Head Coach Mona Stevens
"We are looking forward to playing Southern Utah and BYU, now all we need is good weather this weekend. I think BYU and us are two of the best hitting teams in the conference so it should be a good battle. I'm excited to take Brianna Gourdin down there since her pitching performances are getting better and better each week.
"Our team really showed its heart by coming out and getting after it last weekend. Despite the rough preseason, we played well to open home and conference play. Taking both the player and the pitcher of the week honors to open conference shows this team is very talented. The best part of that is we had a couple hitters who could have been nominated for the player honor because of their performances last week."
Stevens Approaching 250th Career Victory
Mona Stevens, in her eighth season at Utah, is approaching the 250-career win mark. Stevens (248-198-1) needs two wins to reach the 250-win plateau, which she could do this weekend with three games scheduled for the Utes.
