IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 24-ranked (USA Today/CSTV) University of Utah racked up its second straight win as it topped the Liberty Lady Flames, 3-0.
The Utes up to 2-0 for the season while Liberty now owns a 0-2 record.
"We played well," head coach Beth Launiere said. "I'm excited with how consistent the team played. Our subs came in off the bench and did a good job.
"It was a good match to get this team some experience."
Utah chalked up the victory on game scores of 30-11, 30-14 and 30-21.
It was an all-around performance for the Utes as both offense and defense were in sync. Utah, who hit a swift .383 for the match, didn't record an attacking error until the third game. Liberty hit -.106 for the match The Utes hit .427 in the first two games, tallying 25 kills on 53 attempts and no errors. For the match, they tallied 35 kills on 81 attempts with only the four errors.
Ten of the 13 Utes who saw action recorded at least one kill. Amie Toone led the way with seven while Kelsie Kartchner bagged six.
Utah's defense shined as well, outblocking Liberty, 17.5-1.0. This after the Utes tallied 19.5 team blocks in the season-opening win over Utah Valley State on Wednesday. Leading the way at the net was Amie Toone and her eight block assists. Kartchner recorded six block assists while Emillie Toone came off the bench to post five block assists.
"After the matches, the teams asks if they have set a new blocking record," Launiere said. "This team wants the blocking record because we can dominate the net. That is going to be a big part of our success this year."
The Utes got off to a good start in game one, hitting 48 percent (13 kills, 27 attempts and no errors) to Liberty's -.156. Utah jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the Lady Flames and saw its largest lead snowball to 19 thanks to a 10-2, game-ending run.
A 5-0 run midway through the second game allowed the Utes pull away from their rivals, 16-6. Utah cruised to the 16-point win on hitting .462 (12 kills, 26 attempts and no errors).
Liberty and Utah played a tight game three. Utah never held more than a four-point lead in the early going (12-8) and Liberty even had it down to one at 14-13. But, Utah stepped up late and engineered a 9-0 run to take a 23-13 lead. However, the Utes held off a late Liberty surge to preserve the victory.
The Utes return to action later this afternoon as they battle George Washington on Crawford Court here in Irvine, Calif. Match time with the Colonials is set for 2 p.m. (PDT).
