Ute Volleyball Downs Colonials, 3-1

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 24-ranked (USA Today/CSTV) University of Utah women's volleyball team began the season 3-0 by topping the George Washington Colonials here this afternoon, 3-1.
Utah's record remains unblemished after topping Liberty in a match earlier this afternoon, 3-0. George Washington drops to 0-1 for the season.
"It was a good opponent for us," head coach Beth Launiere said. "GW pressured us and did things we hadn't seen yet this season. We had to make adjustments and I think that we responded well to the challenge."
Game scores were 30-19, 24-30, 30-19 and 30-25.
Defense was one of the strengths yet again for Utah. The Utes doubled-up the Colonials, 12-6, in team blocks. Lyndsey Henderson's eight blocks (two solo, six assisted) led Utah.
Utah hit .333 for the match (63 kills, 129 attempts and 20 errors) to GW's .163. Three Ute spikers tallied double-digit kills. Kelsie Kartchner led with a match-high 16 while Henderson tallied 14 and Amie Toone 11.
The trio hit better than .450 for the match as well. Toone led with a .688 hitting percentage (11 kills, 16 attempts and no errors), while Kartchner tallied a .583 and Henderson a .476.
Kartchner had a double-doube with 25 assists but Tracy Neumeier led all Utes with 30 assists. The Colonials' Kaimana Lee led all players with 32 assists.
Connie Dangerfield led from the back, turning in a match-high 16 digs.
The Colonials could never get any closer than four points after the Utes jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game one. The Utes led by as much as 10 several times late in the match, chalking up the 11-point win. Utah hit .290 to GW's .029 for the game.
GW staved off two Utah comebacks to hold it at bay for a game-two win. Trailing from the onset, Utah knotted it at 7-7 and fell behind again thanks in part to an 8-0 Colonial run. The game went back and forth once Utah tied it at 20 apiece. But GW hit .367 to Utah's .182 in posting the six-point win.
Gritty play got Utah back in the win column in game three. The Utes, who trailed the entire first half of the game, rallied to tie it at 14. Hitting .557 for the game, Utah never trailed from that point on and ended the game with a 10-0 run.
Utah had to hold off a late GW rally to tally a game-four victory. While the Utes led wire to wire, the Colonials were able to cut a 28-22 Utah lead down the three. Utah hit 33 percent to GW's .119 in securing the victory.
The Utes' road swing through southern Los Angeles continues tomorrow when they battle at Long Beach State. Match time is set for 7 p.m. (PDT).
