Quickly On Utah
The Runnin' Utes (14-3, 2-0 MWC) return home for a pair of Mountain West Conference games this weekend. Utah takes on New Mexico (14-3, 1-1 MWC) on Saturday at 1:04 p.m. (MST) at Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game will be televised by ESPN Regional (shown on KJZZ-TV 14 in Salt Lake City) as the Mountain West Conference "Game of the Week" and broadcast on Hot Ticket 700 (KALL-AM) and the Utah Sports Network. The Utes are 10-0 at home this season and have an 11-game homecourt winning streak.

Utah has won 10 consecutive games--its longest winning streak in the last three seasons--and 11 of the last 12. During its recent streak, Utah has won by an average of 20.4 points per game. Last weekend, the Runnin' Utes swept their road trip along the front range of the Rocky Mountains, defeating Wyoming 74-49 on Saturday and Colorado State 75-52 on Monday night.

Sophomore center/forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 245) leads the Utes in scoring (19.4 ppg), rebounding (11.9 rpg) and blocked shots (29), and is second in field goal percentage (62.4). Bogut has 13 double-doubles this season to lead the nation. Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) is second in scoring (11.7 ppg), hitting 55.2 percent of his three-point attempts (37-of-67) and a team-best 85.1 percent of his free throws. Jackson is also second in assists (3.1 apg). Junior forward/guard Richard Chaney, coming back from a broken left hand, has started 10 games and played in 11 this season. Chaney is third on the team in scoring average (11.5 ppg). Junior forward Bryant Markson (6-6, 190) is fourth in scoring (10.3 ppg) and second in rebounding (3.9 rpg). Junior guard Tim Drisdom (6-3, 203) leads the Utes in assists (3.4 apg) and has a 2.38 assists to turnover ratio.

As of Jan. 18, the Utes ranked third in the NCAA in field goal percentage (52.2), third in rebound margin (+11.3), ninth in scoring defense (57.8 ppg) and 10th in three-point percentage (42.2). Andrew Bogut was tied for first in rebounding (11.9 rpg), and ranked 10th in field goal percentage (62.4) and 28th in scoring (19.4 ppg). Marc Jackson came in 17th in free throw percentage (85.1).

From The Training Room
? Junior forward/guard Richard Chaney was examined by team physicians on Thursday and given clearance to participate. He is expected to play against New Mexico on Saturday. Chaney broke two bones in his left hand on Dec. 27 in practice and had surgery two days later.

? Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins has been suffering from a sore back since the Weber State game on Dec. 28. After being limited to just 13 minutes against Colorado on Dec. 30, Hawkins did not play against LSU or Whitworth. He has seen limited playing time in Utah's three conference games, due partially to a head injury suffered in the Wyoming game last Saturday.

Scouting The Lobos
New Mexico is 14-3 overall and in fourth place in the Mountain West Conference with a 1-1 record. The Lobos had a four-game winning streak snapped with a 64-62 loss at Air Force last Saturday. Before then, UNM had defeated Mississippi Valley State (101-68) at home on Dec 28, Troy (88-66) at home on Dec. 29, Texas-Arlington (64-55) on the road on Jan. 3 and Wyoming (89-75) at home on Jan. 8. New Mexico is 2-2 on the road this season.

Senior forward Danny Granger (6-8, 225), the preseason MWC Player of the Year, missed the Air Force game last Saturday after tearing the lateral meniscus in his left knee against Wyoming on Jan. 8 and having arthroscopic surgery on Jan. 10. His status for the Utah game is listed as a game-time decision. Granger ranks second in the Mountain West is scoring (19.1 ppg), second in rebounding (8.9 rpg), ninth in field goal percentage (57.1), first in steals (2.44 spg), second in three-point percentage (54.2) and second in blocked shots (2.31). Senior guard Troy DeVries (6-4, 195) is 13th in the league in scoring (11.7 ppg), eighth in assists (2.88 apg), fifth in three-point percentage (45.8) and first in three-pointers per game (2.88). Junior forward David Chiotti (6-9, 245) is 17th in the MWC in scoring (10.5 ppg), seventh in rebounding (5.9 rpg), fifth in field goal percentage (60.7) and 12th in free throw percentage (75.4). Junior guard Mark Walters (6-2, 225) is the fourth Lobo averaging double figures in scoring (10.3 ppg), and ranks ninth in the MWC in assists (2.71 apg) and fourth in steals (1.47).

The Lobos rank first in the MWC in scoring (81.8 ppg), third in scoring defense (65.4 ppg), second in rebound margin (+6.8 rpg), first in field goal percentage (52.5), first in assists (16.53 apg) and first in three-point field goals per game (8.41).

Head Coach Ritchie McKay
Ritchie McKay is 38-35 in his third season at New Mexico and has a 121-124 record in his ninth year as a head coach. In his first year with the Lobos in 2002-03, the team went 10-18 and placed seventh in the MWC with a 4-10 mark. Last year, UNM went 14-14 and tied for fifth at 5-9 in league play.

McKay, who was the head coach at Colorado State for two seasons (1998-2000), returned to the Mountain West Conference following a two-year stint at Oregon State (2000-02) where he went 22-37. At CSU, McKay went 19-11 in 1998-99, taking the Rams to the third round of the NIT. His team went 18-12 in 1999-2000 when he was named Coach of the Year by College Hoops Insider magazine. McKay began his head coaching career at Portland State, going 24-29 in two seasons from 1996-98.

Utah-New Mexico Series Notes
? The Utes and Lobos meet for the 113th time on Saturday afternoon. The series dates back to a 59-47 win by Utah on Jan. 3, 1952 in Albuquerque, N.M., in a Skyline Conference match-up.

? Utah leads the all-time series 73-39, winning 11 of the last 15 games.

? The Utes and Lobos split the 2003-04 season series. New Mexico won 70-54 on Jan. 24 in Albuquerque. Utah prevailed 73-43 on Feb. 23 in Salt Lake City.

? In conference play, the Utes have a 70-36 advantage. Utah leads 7-4 in Mountain West games.

? In Salt Lake City, Utah has a 48-5 advantage and has won 15 in a row. The Utes haven't lost to the Lobos in the Huntsman Center since falling 79-76 on Feb. 16, 1989.

? Ray Giacoletti has never faced New Mexico.

? Ritchie McKay is 3-3 against Utah, including a 2-2 record while at New Mexico. He went 1-1 against Utah during his tenure at Colorado State, splitting the season series in 1999-2000. The Utes and Rams did not meet in 1998-99.

Last Meeting
Nick Jacobson made six shots from beyond the arc and tied his career-high with 28 points to lead Utah past New Mexico 73-43 last season on Feb. 23 in Salt Lake City.

In his final home game, Jacobson made three-pointers on three consecutive possessions in the second half. Andrew Bogut scored 20 points and had 14 rebounds and Tim Frost added 14 points as Utah shot 53 percent from the field, the Utes' best mark in their last 11 games.

Despite playing his second straight subpar game, Danny Granger led the Lobos with 12 points as they dropped their 25th straight road game. Granger, the conference's leading scorer, had a season-low nine points at BYU two days earlier and was just 4-of-11 as the Utes seemed determined not to let Granger repeat his 28 point performance when the Lobos beat Utah 70-54 on January 24.

Javin Tindall scored 10 points for New Mexico, which managed just 33 percent shooting and made just 7-of-17 from the line.

Jacobson capped a 12-2 run to end the first half with a layup and then left a lasting impression with his second-half marksmanship. The third of his three straight three-pointers gave Utah a 65-32 lead with 7:38 to play.

Boasting Of Bogut, Utah's Wooden and Naismith Awards Candidate
Sophomore forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 245) has been named to the 2004 John R. Wooden Preseason All-America Team and is a preseason candidate for the Naismith Award. Last season, Bogut was honored as the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, second team all-MWC, and second team All-District 13 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He also made the CollegeInsider.com all-freshman team.

? Bogut leads the Utes in scoring (19.4 ppg), rebounds (11.9 rpg), blocked shots (29) and steals (23). He is also second in field goal percentage (62.4), third in assists (2.5 apg), and is shooting 69.9 percent from the free throw line. He has led the Utes in scoring 12 times and rebounding 17 times this season.

? Bogut has had double-doubles in 13 of the 18 games this season to rank first in the nation in that category. He has 27 double-doubles in his career. Bogut had a string of seven double-doubles from Dec. 11-Jan. 3. He has had two in the four games since then.

? Bogut has scored in double figures all 18 games this season, bringing his double-figure scoring streak to 20 consecutive games dating back to last season.

? He has ten 20-point games this season, bringing his career total to 13. He scored 20 points eight games in a row from Dec. 11-Jan. 5

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Jan. 18, Bogut was tied for first in rebounds per game (11.9), 10th in field goal percentage (62.4) and 28th in points per game (19.4).

? His last double-double was a 25-point (10-21 FG, 5-9 FT), 18-rebound performance against Colorado State on Jan. 17. He tied a career-high in rebounds in that game, equalling the mark he established against Minnesota on Nov. 19, 2003 and tying the 12th-best single-game mark in Utah history. Bogut also had two assists, two steals and a blocked shot in 35 minutes against the Rams.

? Bogut has been at his best the last 11 games, leading the Utes to a 10-game winning streak after a narrow 67-62 loss at No. 15 Arizona. During that span, he has averaged 21.5 points and 13.2 rebounds in 32.0 minutes per game.

Markson Making His Mark
Junior forward Bryant Markson (6-6, 190) is fourth on the team in scoring (10.3 ppg) and second in rebounding (3.9 rpg). He has started seven games this season and played in all 18, averaging 25.0 minutes per game. Markson has scored in double figures 12 times this season, including the last seven games.

? Markson had a career-high 20 points in 30 minutes against Colorado State last Monday. He made 5-of-7 shots from the field, 1-of-2 three-pointers and and 9-of-10 free throws. He also had three rebounds and two assists.

? The Monrovia, Calif., native has been playing a bigger role the past seven games in the absence of Richard Chaney, who is out with a broken left hand. He has started five of the seven games, averaging 32.3 minutes per contest. He has averaged 14.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, ranking second only to Andrew Bogut in those categories. He has also shot 59.6 percent from the field and 79.1 percent from the free throw line.

? Here's a breakdown of Markson's scoring totals the last six games. In addition to 20 points against Colorado State on Monday, he had 15 points versus Wyoming (Jan. 15), 17 points against UNLV (Jan. 10), 11 against Whitworth (Jan. 5), 12 against LSU (Jan. 3), 14 versus Colorado (Dec. 30) and 12 points against Weber State (Dec. 28). He also had a career high tying eight rebounds against both Colorado and LSU.

Utes Sweep Front Range Trip For Just Second Time Since Mid-70's
Utah swept the Colorado State/Wyoming road swing last weekend for just the second time since the 1975-76 season.

The Runnin' Utes also swept the road trip in 2002-03, winning at Colorado State (71-66) on Feb. 8 and at Wyoming (69-56) on Feb. 10. Before that win against the Cowboys, Utah had lost seven in a row in Laramie with its previous win in the Arena-Auditorium coming on Jan. 28, 1992 (64-45). Utah won at both Colorado State and Wyoming during the 1990-91 season; however, that year the two games were played over a month apart.

Longest Winning Streak In Three Years
With its wins over Wyoming and Colorado State, Utah extended its winning streak to 10 games, which is its longest since the 2001-02 season. The Runnin' Utes had nine-game winning streaks in both 2002-03 and `03-04. The U. won 13 games in a row during the 2001-02 season from Dec. 8-Feb. 2. The longest winning streak in Utah history is 23 games during the 1998-99 season.

Best Record In Mountain West Games Belongs To Utah
The Runnin' Utes have the most wins in league games in the six-year history of the Mountain West Conference. Utah is 53-20 (.726) in MWC games, including 33-3 at home and 20-17 on the road. BYU is second at 45-28 (.616), followed by Wyoming (42-31) and UNLV (41-31). The Utes' road record is also the best in conference history.

Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of Utah basketball in recent years has been a stifling half-court defense. Since the 1989-90 season, Utah has finished in the top 30 in the nation 12 times in scoring defense, 10 times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Jan. 18, Utah ranked third in rebound margin (+11.3 rpg), ninth in scoring defense (57.8 ppg) and fifth in fewest personal fouls per game (13.8).

? The U. has held each of its last seven opponents to 60 points or less. During the last seven games, teams have averaged 50.9 points per game against the Utes while shooting 38.2 percent from the field and 31.5 percent from three-point range. Utah has also held a 38.3 to 21.9 advantage on the boards.

? The Utes have outrebounded the opposition in 15 of the 18 games this season--including the last 10--and had a push in one other game (vs. Stony Brook in the season opener), going 15-1 in those contests. That continues a trend from last season when the Utes outrebounded 30 of 33 opponents.

? Utah has allowed just three opponents to shoot better than 50 percent from the field this season: Washington (53.4 in a loss), Utah State (65.0 in a loss) and Cal Poly (54.5 in a win).

? Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 146 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.

Utes Tough At Home In The Huntsman Center
Utah is 220-19 (.920) in the Huntsman Center over the last 16 seasons and has never lost back-to-back home games. The Utes are 10-0 at home this season.

? The Utes have captured 42 of their last 44 games at home with their only two losses coming to Colorado State on March 6, 2003, ending a 16-game home winning streak, and a 59-57 loss to Air Force on Feb. 21, terminating a string of 15 consecutive home wins.

? Dating back to the 1993-94 season, the Utes have won 158 of their last 169 games in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

? In conference home games over the last 11 years, Utah is 72-4 (.947). That mark ranks second-best in the nation over that period to Kansas, which is 75-4 (.949).
