At No. 2, sophomore Nick Coutts and freshman Rian Rifkin dispatched Joao Pinho and Hannes Schenk (8-4). Ute duo of sophomores Tomasz Grzyb and Ryan Scott picked up the final doubles win with an (8-5) victory over Mike Banks and Roshan Rusekhi.
In singles play, Utah claimed wins at five spots. Freshmen Ganger and Rifkin made it into the lineup. Ganger defeated Schenk (6-2, 7-5) at the No. 2. After a hard fought match at the No. 5, Rifkin fell to Aggie Brad Ferguson (4-6, 7-5 (10-7)).
Assistant Coach Graeme Cox.: "Tonight was a nice start to the 2005 season. It is always great to start off with a win. Utah St. competed well and the match was closer that the score indicated. Rian Rifkin made an excellent doubles debut, and Zach Ganger was impressive in his first match as a Ute. Hopefully they, and the rest of the team will be able to continue the good form into the Montana St. match on Friday."
