SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team has been picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll.
In the poll of league coaches, Utah received 12 points in taking fourth in the balloting. The Utes went 23-33 last year, tallying an 8-12 mark in league play. They return seven starters after taking the 2004 MWC Tournament Title and winning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAAs. Among the returnees are MWC Tournament MVP Brianna Gourdin and two-time all-conference honoree Lynsey Wall.
San Diego State with its 22 points and two first-place votes sits atop the preseason poll. The Aztecs have won two of the last three regular season conference titles (2002-2003).
It was a tie for second. Defending MWC regular season champion Colorado State and Brigham Young both tallied 20 points and two first-place votes.
Trailing the Utes were New Mexico and UNLV. Both collected eight points and finished in a tie for fifth.
The Utes begin their season next week when they play at the BYU/UVSC Tournament in St. George, Utah, from Feb. 4-5. Conference play for the Utes begins on April 2 when they host BYU.
