Quickly On Utah
The Runnin' Utes (17-3, 5-0 MWC) play the first of three consecutive road games against instate rival Brigham Young (7-13, 1-4 MWC) on Monday at 10:01 p.m. (MST) at the Marriott Center (22,700) in Provo, Utah. The game will be televised as a part of ESPN's "Big Monday" and broadcast on Hot Ticket 700 (KALL-AM) and the Utah Sports Network. Utah is 3-2 on opponents' home courts this season and 5-3 overall away from home.

Utah entered both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls at No. 25 last Monday. The Runnin' Utes were last ranked in the AP poll on Feb. 18 (No. 23) and Feb 25 (No. 22) during the 2002-03 season. Utah has won 12 consecutive games--its longest winning streak in the last three seasons--and 13 of the last 14. During its recent winning streak, Utah has won by an average of 14.4 points per game.

Last weekend, Utah defeated New Mexico 69-58 on Saturday afternoon and Air Force 63-51 on Monday night in the Huntsman Center.

Sophomore center/forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 245) leads the Utes in scoring (20.0 ppg), rebounding (12.2 rpg) and blocked shots (33), and is shooting 64.7 percent from the field. Bogut has 14 double-doubles this season to lead the nation. Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) is second in scoring (11.3 ppg), hitting 53.4 percent of his three-point attempts (39-of-73) and 82.9 percent of his free throws. Jackson is also second in assists (3.6 apg). Junior forward/guard Richard Chaney, who has played in the last two games after missing seven with a broken left hand, is third on the team in scoring average (10.7 ppg). Junior forward Bryant Markson (6-6, 190) is fourth in scoring average (10.5 ppg) and second in rebounding (3.8 rpg). Junior guard Tim Drisdom (6-3, 203) leads the Utes in assists (3.7 apg) and has a 2.31 assists to turnover ratio.

As of Jan. 25, the Utes ranked first in the NCAA in field goal percentage (53.5), third in rebound margin (+11.3), seventh in scoring defense (57.5 ppg) and sixth in three-point percentage (41.7). Andrew Bogut was ranked tied for first in rebounding (12.2 rpg), fourth in field goal percentage (64.7) and 21st in scoring (20.0 ppg).

Only Two Utah Teams Since 1990-91 Better Through 20 Games
With a 17-3 record through 20 games, the 2004-05 Runnin' Utes have one of the seven best records at this point in the season during the last 15 years. Only two Utah teams were better, with both the 1990-91 and 1997-98 teams going 19-1 through 20 games. Both of those teams finished 30-4 to set the school record for wins. Four other teams since 1990-91 were also 17-3 through 20 games (final record noted): 1992-93 (24-7), 1995-96 (27-7), 1996-97 (29-4) and 1999-2000 (23-9).

Utes Vying To Tie School's Longest Winning Streak In Six Years
With its win over Air Force, Utah extended its winning streak to 12 games, which is its longest since the 2001-02 season. The Runnin' Utes had nine-game winning streaks in both 2002-03 and `03-04. The U. won 13 games in a row during the 2001-02 season from Dec. 8-Feb. 2. The longest winning streak in Utah history is 23 games during the 1998-99 season.

Scouting The Cougars
BYU is 7-13 overall and tied for seventh place in the Mountain West Conference with a 1-4 record. The Cougars broke a three-game losing streak with a 68-53 victory over New Mexico on Monday night in Provo, Utah. Before then, BYU had lost at Colorado State (74-67) on Jan. 15, at Wyoming (83-71) on Jan. 17 and to Air Force at home (52-49) on Jan. 22.

Senior guard Mike Hall (6-3, 205) ranks ninth in the Mountain West in scoring (13.8 ppg), 14th in assists (2.25 apg) and tied for fourth in free throw percentage (81.5). Sophomore guard Mike Rose (6-2, 180) ranks 20th in the league in scoring (10.2 ppg) and ninth in three-point percentage (42.1) while shooting 48-for-114. Senior forward/center Jared Jensen (6-9, 250) is averaging 9.1 points per game and ranks first in the MWC in free throw percentage (87.5). Sophomore guard Austin Ainge (6-2, 180) is fourth in the MWC in assists (4.05 apg) and 12th in three-point percentage (35.9) while averaging 9.1 points per game. Sophomore guard/forward Keena Young (6-6, 200) ranks eighth in the conference in rebounding (5.9 rpg). Sophomore center Derek Dawes (6-11, 275) is 12th in the MWC in rebounding (4.9 rpg) and ninth in blocked shots (1.05 bpg).

Head Coach Steve Cleveland
Steve Cleveland is in his eighth season at BYU and has a 136-100 career record. Last season, Cleveland guided BYU to a 21-9 record and the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2002-03, the Cougars went 23-9, advanced to the the first round of the NCAA Tournament and captured a share of the MWC regular-season title with an 11-3 mark. In 2000-01, Cleveland took BYU to its first NCAA Tournament since 1995, its first conference regular-season title since 1993 and its first conference tournament championship since 1992. BYU played in the NIT in 2000 (third round) and 2002 (second round). Before taking over at BYU, Cleveland was the head coach at Fresno City College.

? Utah and BYU have met 237 times. The Utah vs. BYU series ranks 10th among NCAA Division I rivalries in number of games played.

? The Cougars are the Utes' oldest rivals in a series that dates back to a 32-9 win by BYU on Jan. 23, 1909 in Provo, Utah.

? The Utes lead the all-time series 120-117, winning 18 of the last 22 meetings and four of the last five.

? Utah had a three-game winning streak in the series before losing 70-57 last season on March 1 in Provo, Utah. The Utes still took the 2003-04 season series 2-1 after defeating the Cougars 54-52 in the MWC Tournament semifinals on March 12 in Denver. Colo. The U. swept the season series in 2002-03, getting a 79-75 win on Jan. 25 in Provo, Utah, and a 71-64 win on Feb. 24 in Salt Lake City.

Last Meeting
Nick Jacobson scored 19 points, including seven points in the last 4:27, as Utah edged BYU 54-51 in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

Tim Frost added 10 points for Utah, which built a 10-point lead early in the second half and hung on at the finish. Rafael Araujo had 13 points for BYU, the No. 2 seed whose nine-game winning streak was snapped.

Utah scored on five straight layups with crisp passing early in the second half, including two baskets on inbounds passes from Tim Drisdom. Jacobson's three-pointer made it 39-29 with 12:59 remaining.

BYU chipped away at the deficit, then scored seven straight points, including Mike Rose's three-point basket to make it 43-43 with 6:26 left.

But Utah's Richard Chaney made a driving layup and Jacobson followed with a three-pointer. After Araujo cut the lead to 48-46, Jacobson hit a jumper with 2:42 left.

BYU's Mark Bigelow hit a jump hook with 1:09 to go, but Jacobson countered with layup on a pass from Andrew Bogut to push the lead back to four points with 50 seconds left.

Araujo, the conference's co-player of the year, hit a three-pointer with 40 seconds left to make it 52-51. Utah got a new shot clock when BYU's Kevin Woodberry committed a foul, and Chaney broke free and made a layup on a pass from Bogut with 0.2 seconds to go. BYU's Mike Hall missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Bogut and Jacobson each had seven points in the first half to help Utah take a 26-20 halftime lead. BYU had only one offensive rebound in the half and was outrebounded 19-14 overall.

Two Most Successful Teams In MWC's Short History Meet Monday
The Runnin' Utes have the most wins in league games in the six-year history of the Mountain West Conference. Utah is 55-20 (.733) in MWC games, including 35-3 at home and 20-17 on the road. The Utes' road mark is also the best in conference history. BYU is second at 46-29 (.613) and had a 33-5 home record. The Cougars are followed by Wyoming and UNLV (43-31).

Boasting Of Bogut, Utah's Wooden and Naismith Awards Candidate
Sophomore forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 245) has been named a candidate for the John R. Wooden and Naismith national player of the year awards. Bogut leads the Utes in scoring (20.0 ppg), rebounds (12.2 rpg), blocked shots (33) and steals (23). He is also third in assists (2.4 apg), and is shooting 64.7 percent from the field and 69.3 percent from the free throw line. He has led the Utes in scoring 14 times and rebounding 19 times this season. In an effort to promote Bogut for All-America and national player of the year honors, the University of Utah has launched an official Andrew Bogut website at www.utahutes.com/andrewbogut.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Jan. 25, Bogut was tied for first in rebounds per game (12.2), fourth in field goal percentage (64.7) and 21st in points per game (20.0).

? Bogut has had double-doubles in 14 of the 20 games this season to rank first in the nation in that category.

? Bogut has scored in double figures in all 20 games this season, bringing his double-figure scoring streak to 22 consecutive games dating back to last season.

? He has twelve 20-point games this season, bringing his career total to 15. He scored at least 20 points eight games in a row from Dec. 11-Jan. 5 and has hit the mark in the last three games.

? Bogut had 25 points to go with nine boards and three assists in 40 minutes against Air Force on Jan. 24. He shot 11-for-12 from the field (.916) to tie the fifth-best mark for field goal percentage in Utah history, record the second-best single-game mark in Mountain West history and tie the top mark in MWC league games.

? Bogut had one of only six 20-20 games in the nation this season and the fourth in Utah history with 24 points and a career-high 20 rebounds against New Mexico on Jan. 15. It was one of nine 20-rebound games in Utah history. The last Ute to record a 20-20 game was Tom Chambers on Dec. 19, 1979 versus Utah State. It was also the second 20-20 game in MWC history, joining Louis Amundson's effort of 22 points and 22 rebounds against Auburn on Dec. 12, 2004.

Jackson Back In Action
Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) has rejoined the team for his senior year after electing to take off the 2003-04 season. He is the Utes' best three-point shooter, hitting 53.4 percent and making 39-of-73 from beyond the arc. Jackson is second on the team in scoring (11.3 ppg), second in assists (3.6 apg) and tied for second in free throw percentage (82.9). He is also shooting 51.7 percent from the field.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Jan. 25, Jackson ranked 17th in free throw percentage (82.9).

? Jackson had his first double-double with a career-high tying 10 assists (just two turnovers) and 11 points in 39 minutes against Air Force on Jan. 24.

? In the last 13 games, Jackson has had 61 assists and 29 turnovers. Jackson established his career-high with 10 assists (and three turnovers) against Wyoming on Jan. 15. He's had at least five assists in 12 games in his career and seven times this season.

Shooting Down Records Against Air Force
? Utah shot 80.0 percent from the field to break the old school record of 73.7 percent set against Air Force on Feb. 19, 1987.

? The U. also broke the Mountain West Conference field goal percentage record for all games and league games of 72.5 percent by BYU vs. Air Force on Jan. 24, 2004.

? Utah's effort tied for the sixth-best single game performance in NCAA history.

? The Utes set the top two records in school history for shooting percentage in a half. Utah shot 81.3 percent in the first half and 78.6 percent in the second half. The former best mark was 78.2 percent in the second half against BYU on Feb. 4, 1978.

Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of Utah basketball in recent years has been a stifling half-court defense. Since the 1989-90 season, Utah has finished in the top 30 in the nation 12 times in scoring defense, 10 times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Jan. 25, Utah ranked third in rebound margin (+11.3 rpg), seventh in scoring defense (57.5 ppg) and third in fewest personal fouls per game (13.9).

? The U. has held each of its last nine opponents to 60 points or less. During the last nine games, teams have averaged 51.7 points per game against the Utes while shooting 39.0 percent from the field and 33.2 percent from three-point range. Utah has also held a 36.3 to 21.0 advantage on the boards.

? The Utes have outrebounded the opposition in 17 of the 20 games this season--including the last 12--and had a push in one other game (vs. Stony Brook in the season opener), going 17-1 in those contests.

? Utah has allowed just three opponents to shoot better than 50 percent from the field this season: Washington (53.4 in a loss), Utah State (65.0 in a loss) and Cal Poly (54.5 in a win).

? Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 148 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.

They've Got The License To Shoot
In order to take a three-point shot, Utah players have to earn their license first. A Ute player earns his "License to Shoot" from the coaching staff by making 35 of 50 three-pointers from all over the floor during a drill that can be attempted once a day before the season. It must be completed five times. Utes who have earned their "License to Shoot" for 2004-05 are Andrew Bogut, Richard Chaney, Tim Drisdom, Casey Iverson, Justin Hawkins, Marc Jackson, Jonas Langvad and Bryant Markson.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Jan. 25, Utah ranked sixth in three-point percentage (41.7).

? Utah is shooting 41.7 percent from three-point range this season, ranking first in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes have shot 40 percent or better 12 times this year--winning all of those games. Utah has shot at least 50 percent six times, including three times in five conference games: a season-high 58.3 percent (7-of-12) against High Point, 50.0 (7-of-14) against Northern Colorado, 54.5 (6-of-11) against Whitworth, 56.3 (9-of-16) against Wyoming, 53.8 (7-for-13) against Colorado State and 57.1 (4-for-7) versus Air Force.

? Utah is shooting 46.7 percent from three-point range in MWC games, leading the league

? The Utes hit a season-best nine three-pointers against Wyoming on Jan. 15. Utah has made seven three-pointers on five occasions: High Point, Arizona, Northern Colorado, LSU, UNLV.

? The leading three-point shooter on the team among those with over 15 attempts is Marc Jackson, who is hitting 53.4 percent (39-of-73) from beyond the arc. Tim Drisdom (46.2) is second, followed by Jonas Langvad (40.7), Richard Chaney (37.5) and Bryant Markson (34.2).

? The Utes' proficiency from three-point range has helped them shoot 53.5 percent from the field on the season, ranking first in the MWC.
