SALT LAKE CITY - Bryant Markson scored a game-high 15 points and Luke Nevill added 13 as Utah downed Northwest Nazarene 79-51 in its final exhibition game on Monday night at the Huntsman Center.
Mesut Ademoglu scored 14 points, hitting two of three three-point attempts, and pulled down nine rebounds for the Crusaders. Tim Ireland contributed 10 points, while Ryan McCarty made three of his eight three-point tries for nine points.
The Crusaders shot just 32 percent (8-for-25) from the floor in the first half and were outshot 53.2 to 40.0 percent for the game. Northwest Nazarene also committed 23 turnovers to Utah's 17.
However, the Crusaders shot 40 percent from three-point range and were particularly good from beyond the arc in the second half, connecting on six of 14 attempts.
The Runnin' Utes outscored the Crusaders 40-18 in the first half, then maintained that margin throughout the second half. Markson scored all but two of his 15 points in the first 20 minutes and got to the free throw line five times, converting all of his attempts.
Utah closed the opening half on an 11-3 run over the final 3:49. Nevill, who had six points in the first 20 minutes, started the spurt with a layup off of a nice pass from sophomore Johnnie Bryant. After a three-point play by Markson, Nevill stuck a 10-foot jumper in the middle of the lane with just over a minute left before halftime. Nevill was then was set-up for another easy lay-in by Lawrence Borha. Borha, a freshman from Staten Island, N.Y., closed the first half with floater on the baseline to put the Utes ahead 40-18.
Borha pushed the Ute lead to 50-25 at the 13:32 mark in the second half with a nice drive for a reverse layup. A pair of free throws by both Bryant and Nevill then put the Utes ahead by nearly 30 points at 54-25.
After the Crusaders sliced the Ute lead to 21 points (66-45) on a layup by Wade Joseph, Chris Grant, who started at the two-guard position, fed Chris Jackson for dunks on successive possessions to expand the Ute cushion to 70-45 with 3:39 remaining.
Nevill, a redshirt freshman from Perth, Australia, went 7-for-9 at the free throw line and pulled down five rebounds in 19 minutes. Markson led the Utes with six boards and three steals in 22 minutes.
Grant, Bryant and Borha all accounted for three assists for the U. The Utes finished with 40-25 advantage on the boards and forced 10 steals.
Utah opens its regular season against Texas State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the Huntsman Center.
