SALT LAKE CITY - Stephen Weigh, a 6-foot-6, 215-pound guard from Rockhampton, Australia, has signed a national letter of intent with the University of Utah men's basketball team. The announcement came today from Ute head coach Ray Giacoletti.
Weigh is currently in his second year on scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, the country's junior national development program which also produced former Ute Andrew Bogut. Weigh's second season with the AIS team will begin in February.
Weigh led the AIS team in scoring last July at the 2005 Jones Cup, a FIBA International Tournament in Taipei. He averaged 18 points and five rebounds per game. Against Team USA, comprised mostly CBA players and overseas professionals, Weigh scored 26 points. He also had a 32-point outburst against the Japanese National Team. The AIS was the only junior age level team in the tournament.
Weigh was the MVP of the Australian Under-20 National Tournament in 2005. He was also the MVP of the Adidas Asia Superstar Camp in 2005.
"I built up a rapport with the Utah coaches over the past year and a half. Then when I visited, it all just seemed right," said Weigh.
"We're excited to have Steve become a part of our basketball family at Utah," said Giacoletti. "Along with the other four young men who signed early, this figures to be a very special class. Recruiting is the lifeblood of a basketball program, and this class certainly helps us take another step in the right direction as we continue to build our program."
The Runnin' Utes have also signed Daniel Deane, a 6-foot-8, 245-pound forward from Judge Memorial High School in Salt Lake City; Curtis Eatmon, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound point guard from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; David Foster, 7-foot-1, 220-pound center from Lake Forest, Calif.; and Kim Tillie, a 6-foot-9, 205-pound forward from Cagnes-sur-Mer, France.
In USA Today's Rob Harrington's rankings of the Top 100 in the 2006 recruiting class, Deane was listed 56th and Eatmon was 90th. Utah was the only Mountain West Conference school to have a recruit ranked. Gonzaga, which had one signee listed, joined Utah as the only West Coast schools outside of the Pac-10 Conference to sign a player in the Top 100.
