SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Bryant Markson scored a game-high 17 points as Utah knocked off in-state rival Southern Utah 69-53 on Saturday night.
The Utes (5-2) pulled away from the Thunderbirds (1-7) in the second half, outscoring Southern Utah 36-24 after leading by only four at halftime.
Southern Utah was able to keep within striking distance most of the game, even while only shooting .346 percent from the field, compared with the Utes' .553 percent.
Markson, who had a game-high nine points and five assists, was one of four Utes to score in double figures.
Freshman forward Shaun Green went four-for-five from 3-point range to finish with a career-high 16 points. Chris Jackson and Johnny Bryant finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively, as the Utes broke a two-game losing streak.
Nate Janes led Southern Utah with 14 points and Steve Barnes hit three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points.
In the first half, Southern Utah got nearly all its points from the perimeter, hitting two field goals from within the 3-point line, and not getting a 2-point basket until 8:55 left in the first half.
But Southern Utah managed to keep it close, thanks to 13 Ute turnovers in the first half. The Utes turned the ball over just five times in the second half as they pulled away down the stretch.
Southern Utah now heads home to play their second home game of the year. They will host Sacramento State on Dec. 17. Utah plays host to Arizona on Dec 17.
