Utah Opens Season at Santa Clara
The University of Utah baseball team opens its 2005 campaign in Santa Clara, Calif. this weekend, taking on the Santa Clara Broncos.
Utah, which has been picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West Conference Preseason Poll, opens the season Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the first of a three-game series at Santa Clara's Buck Shaw Stadium. The series marks the beginning of 14 consecutive road games for the Utes to open the season.

Utah vs. Santa Clara Balls & Strikes
? Utah is 1-2 all-time against Santa Clara. However, the two schools have not played since 1968. The teams met three times between 1966 and '68, with Utah taking one of those meetings.
? Santa Clara is a member of the West Coast Conference. The Broncos were picked to finish fourth in the eight-team conference.
? Santa Clara will be facing one other Mountain West Conference team. The Broncos will be at San Diego State next week.
? Utah will be facing one other West Coast Conference team. The Utes will be traveling to Los Angeles for a three-game series with Loyola Marymount from Feb. 25-27.
? The Utes are 3-6 in the past seven seasons against West Coast Conference schools. Most recently, Utah dropped a game to Gonzaga in 2003. Since 1998, the Utes are 2-3 against Loyola Marymount and 1-2 vs. San Francisco.
Scouting Santa Clara
Santa Clara is 1-2, after opening the season last weekend with a three-game series against UC Riverside.
The Broncos opened Saturday with a doubleheader against the Highlanders.
Santa Clara took the opener by a count of 14-9. The Broncos scored nine runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, erasing a 9-5 deficit. Santa Clara leadoff hitter Ryan Chiarelli drove in three runs, while Jason Matteucci was 4-for-5 at the plate. In the nightcap, UC Riverside broke a 2-2 tie with a single run in the top of the ninth to take a 3-2 win. Santa Clara mustered just five hits against the Highlanders.
The rubber game of the series was played Sunday, with UC Riverside taking a 5-2 victory. The Highlanders built a 4-0 lead before Santa Clara lit the scoreboard.
UC Riverside batted .515, compared to Santa Clara's .364 average. Bronco pitchers allowed five home runs in the series.
Utah Picked Fifth in Mountain West Conference
San Diego State has been picked to win the regular season Mountain West Conference baseball championship. The Aztecs received eight of a possible 14 first-place votes and 78 points, while New Mexico received four first-place nods and 64 points to finish second in the poll.
Two-time defending MWC Tournament champion UNLV garnered two first-place votes and 61 points for a third-place standing in the poll. Meanwhile BYU (49 points) was fourth, Utah (27 points) fifth and Air Force (15 points) sixth. Colorado State and Wyoming do not field teams.
The Price Is Right
Junior lefty Jason Price will get the start for Utah in the season-opener. He is the only returning Ute pitcher from 2004.
Price was 4-8 last season with a 5.73 earned-run average. He set three school records last season, including single-season records for games started (17) and strikeouts (102). The West Jordan, Utah native also set a school record for strikeouts in a game, when he retired 12 Southern Utah batters on March 4.
Khoury Starts Season on Streak
Junior shortstop Ryan Khoury will carry a seven-game hit streak into this season.
Khoury, who started and played in 53 of Utah's 58 games last season, batted .310 in 2004. He batted .333 during that seven-game hitting streak. Khoury ranked third on the team in home runs last season, tallying six round-trippers. One of those homers came during his season-ending streak.
