The Lineup: The University of Utah softball team has the heady task of playing some of the top teams in the nation this week. Utah's pool at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament (Feb. 17-20) consists of No. 19 Fresno State (Thurs., Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.), Notre Dame, which is receiving votes (Friday, Feb. 18 at 9 a.m.), Santa Clara (Friday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m.), No. 3 UCLA (Sat., Feb. 19 at 2 p.m.) and Central Michigan (Sunday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m.). San Diego State University is the host and all times are PST.
Scouting Report -
Fresno State: Fresno State enters the season ranked No. 19 in the country. Its first weekend of play was rained out, so the Campbell/Cartier Tournament will be its 2005 debut. The Bulldogs return their top three batters from last season's team that went 48-20 and 24-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. Leading the way in 2004 was Christan Clark with team highs of 23 home runs, 56 RBI and a .396 batting average. Jamie Southern returns to lead all Bulldog pitchers. She was 30-7 last year with a 0.54 earned-run average.
Notre Dame: Notre Dame, receiving votes in the preseason poll, got the year started last weekend and chalked up a 3-2 tally. The Fighting Irish are on a three-game winning streak, having beat Coastal Carolina, South Florida and Florida to wrap-up weekend play. Megan Ciolli's .353 average leads UND this young season as do her three RBI. Heather Booth's 2-1 tally and 0.84 earned-run average leads the pitching tandem while Steffany Stenglein is 1-1 wth a 2.70 ERA.
Santa Clara: The Broncos enter the tournament sporting a 5-5 mark. They have won four straight, including their most recent back-to-back victories over UC-Davis. Kate Goethals leads the team in hitting with a .308 average. Jessica Clee, hitting .200, leads the squad with seven RBI. Jerrica Castagno leads SCU in the circle. She owns a 2.23 earned-run average and is 3-2 on the season.
UCLA: The Bruins are ranked No. 2 in the preseason and are on the heels of winning the 2004 World Series. UCLA comes to San Diego with a 7-2 mark, having lost to Syracuse in its only game last week. Seven Bruins are hitting .370 or better this year, led by Krista Colburn and her .556 average. She also leads the team with eight RBI. Both pitchers sport earned-run averages below 2.0. Anjelica Selden is tops with a 4-0 mark and 0.23 ERA. Lisa Dodd trails her teammate, having a 3-1 mark and a 1.96 ERA.
Central Michigan: Central has also yet to begin its season. The Chippewas are defending Mid-American Conference champions going 21-3 in league play. They were 32-19 overall in 2004 and advanced to the NCAA tournament. Christin Sobeck led Central last year in hitting .322 and had a team-best seven home runs and 12 doubles. CMU lost its No. 1 thrower, Amber Puchalski, to graduation but return Jessica Garvin and Jill DeRoche who saw considerable action last year.
Quoting Head Coach Mona Stevens:
On the Campbell/Cartier Tournament: "Last weekend, we wanted our shot at Oregon State and Hawaii. But, we lost those games to rain. So, we are looking forward to the chance of playing teams like Fresno State and Notre Dame.
"We don't have much practice time this week with such a quick turnaround, but we'll be able to make the adjustments that we need to make. We'll have no problem taking the field and going after all of our opponents this weekend."
On the Louisville Desert Classic: "I feel that we did not play at our best last weekend. The games that we won, we won on our talent. We are still making mistakes and we are not as comfortable out there as we need to be and as we will be in the coming weeks.
"I think the freshmen were great last weekend. Diana Phillips continues to show how special she is, Meghan Crouse is always getting on base and Sharee Fonoti is a solid shortstop."
Souvenir Note: While Utah is less dependant on the long ball this season, it's still quite proficient at hitting them. Last year's squad tallied 1.16 home runs per game while the 2005 team is still hitting them at 1.0 per-game clip. Of the seven round-trippers hit this year, three of them have come from the bat of Ivette Hernandez.
Show Me the Way Home: The Utes are hitting .339 for the season. More impressive, though, is the fact that Utah hits better when the pressure is on. With baserunners on, Utah is hitting .352 this season. And, with runners in scoring position, the average ups to .371. However, with the sacks empty, the team's batting average slips to .321. Leading the Utes is freshman Diana Phillips. She is hitting an impressive .636 (7-for-11) with runners on.
Lucky No. 7 ... In Vegas?: Ivette Hernandez racked up seven RBI last weekend in four games at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. Four of those RBI came in the 8-2 win over Texas Tech with three of them coming off a three-run home run. The four RBI vs. Texas Tech are the most by a Ute in single game this year.
Nifty Fifty: Kate Nygaard burst out of a season-opening slump last weekend. The catcher/designated player was 1-for-7 in hitting .143 in the first three games of the season. However, in the four games this past weekend, Nygaard went 5-for-10 (.500) with an RBI. Last weekend's effort moved Nygaard into fourth on the team in hitting. For the year, she's hitting .353.
Night and Day: Sarah Lyman has added more offense to her game this season. Last year, the veteran centerfielder hit a meager .156 with 10 hits. Lyman already has six hits to her credit in 2005 and is one of the top batters on the team, checking in at second with a .429 average. Last weekend, Lyman's bat was a boost to the team in hitting .444 (4-for-9) and plating three RBI.
Hits A-Plenty: Utah is averaging 9.0 hits per game thus far. The Utes have scattered 10 or more hits in four of the seven games this year and are 4-0 in those games. Last year at this point, the Utes were averaging just over seven hits per game and finished the season averaging 6.48 per game. Utah has out hit its opponents in all five wins.
Hit and Runs: Utah is 0-1 against ranked opponents this year. It lost to No. 8 Michigan, 7-1, last weekend. It will face three teams listed in the NFCA Coaches Poll this weekend ... Kate Nygaard is on a four-game hitting streak ... Lynsey Wall stepped in and played third for an injured Devina Quintero last weekend. She played the corner in the Michigan and UCR games, making only one error in 11 attempts. Wall had played outfield all last year and in the first five games this season ... Utah leadoff batters are hitting .465 ... the 7-8-9 batters are hitting .413 ... three of the top five MWC batters are freshmen. Utah freshman Diana Phillips ranks fifth with a .444 batting average ... Ivette Hernandez is tied for the league lead in home runs (three) and RBI (nine) ... Lindsie Nielsen has walked only one batter in 78 opposing at bats.
At the Helm: Mona Stevens is in her ninth season as Utah's softball head coach. Stevens is 265-212-1 all-time and owns a 100-72-1 record in conference play. She has led her squad to four NCAA regional appearances and has coached three All-Americans. Stevens has also coached 12 all-West Region players including Glennis Donnelly and Melissa Stahnke in 2004. Her teams have won one MWC regular season title and three MWC tournament titles, including the 2004 tournament championship.
On Deck: Utah will return to action at Oregon State's Palm Springs Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. on Feb. 25-27. Utah will face Oklahoma State, Kansas, Bethune Cookman, Mississippi State and Wisconsin during the three-day tournament. The following week has Utah at Texas A&M's tournament on March 4-6. The Utes play McNeese, Texas A&M and Miami (Ohio).
