Scouting UCLA
UCLA is 6-3 overall this season and will be riding a four-game winning streak when Utah arrives at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles this weekend.
The Bruins swept a pair of games from Cal State Northridge last weekend and defeated UC Riverside on Feb. 8 after stopping Fresno State 6-5 on Feb. 6. UCLA opened the season going 1-2 in a series with Cal Poly. The Bruins then took two of three from Fresno State.
The Bruins are led by dual threat Hector Ambriz. The sophomore from Placentia, Calif. is UCLA's top hitter, batting .484 with one home run and seven RBIs. Ambriz is also the Friday starter for the Bruins. He is 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA in three starts this season. Ambriz has struck out 17 in 16 2/3 innings, while walking just eight.
The Bruins have two other players batting better than .400 so far this season. Anthony Norman and Sean Smith are batting .429 and .424, respectively.
UCLA has five pitchers with ERAs under 3.00 and its team ERA is 3.22.
Utah Rewind
Utah was swept in a three-game series by No. 22 TCU last weekend.
The Horned Frogs took game one by a 10-0 count. The Utes left 18 runners on base and were 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
Game two started Saturday and was completed Sunday, after inclement weather delayed the contest. Utah took a 4-3 lead after three innings, but couldn't hold on. TCU scored single runs in the seventh and eighth to take a 6-4 victory.
In the series finale, the Horned Frogs broke open a close game in the sixth inning. TCU led 3-2 after five, but scored six runs in the sixth. The Frogs added five more in the seventh in a 14-7 victory.
Beck's Big Bat
Senior second baseman Doug Beck has done most of Utah's damage at the plate so far this season. Beck has accounted for one-third of Utah's RBIs and one-fourth of the Utes' extra-base hits.
Beck has driven in six of the Utes' 18 runs. He has two of Utah's eight doubles. The Utes have yet to deliver a triple or home run.
Beck also leads the team with a .429 batting average and ranks second on the squad with five bases on balls. He has been solid in the field as well, with just one error in 32 chances.
Cooper Cools 'Em Off
The Utah pitching staff has struggled somewhat with a 6.32 earned-run average and an opponent batting average of .319. But one Ute pitcher has been outstanding so far this season.
Transfer reliever Josh Cooper has made two appearances and has yet to allow an earned run. In his 7.0 innings of work, opponents are hitting just .250 against him.
Cooper has four strikeouts, just two walks and has allowed just one extra-base hit.
