Scouting Loyola Marymount
Loyola Marymount is 2-3 on the season entering this week's action. The Lions defeated 4-3 Chapman College Wednesday. Chapman is the No. 4-ranked team in NCAA Division III.
Following Wednesday's game, Loyola Marymount will play host to Utah in a three-game series at Page Stadium.
The Lions' only other victory this season came in a 9-8 season-opening decision over the University of California. LMU dropped the final two games of the series with Cal by final tallies of 8-5 and 11-9.
The Lions also dropped a 10-2 decision to perennial powerhouse Cal State-Fullerton.
LMU played an exhibition game against British Columbia on Feb. 16, picking up a 7-6 victory in that contest.
The Lions are led by outfielder Matt White, who is batting .500. Three of White's eight hits are doubles. Outfielder Joe Frazee has also been hot at the plate, putting together a .444 average. LMU starting pitchers Jeff Stevens and Stephen Kahn each boast ERAs of less than 3.00.
Utah Rewind
It took 11 innings at Jackie Robinson Stadium, but the University of Utah baseball team finally found its way into the win column last Friday. The Utes defeated UCLA by a tally of 7-4.
Utah hammered out 15 hits and took advantage of five Bruin errors in the win. After tying the game at 4-4 in the ninth, Utah got things going in the 11th. John Welsh led off with a single to left. Joe Mozeleski followed with a base hit to right, putting runners at first and third.
Ryan Khoury delivered a sacrifice fly to left field to push Welsh across the plate with the go-ahead run, 5-4. Welsh and Joe Mozeleski later scored to make it 7-4. Brian Lane pitched two scoreless innings in relief to take the victory for Utah.
Driving the Lane
Relief pitcher Brian Lane picked up the first victory of the season for a Utah pitcher. He tossed two scoreless innings to close out the Utes' 7-4, 11-inning victory over UCLA last Friday.
Lane has been the most-used hurler so far this season for Utah. He has made five appearances and tossed 7 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run. He is 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA.
Popping the Clutch
